In the story, “We Can Remember it for you Wholesale,” written by Phillip K. Dick, the protagonist, Douglas Quail, must deal with multiple issues involving his memory. In the beginning of the story, Douglas seems to be just an ordinary working class male with a crazy fantasy to visit Mars; but as the story goes along the reader begins to find out there is much more to Douglas Quail. Upon visiting a company by the name of Rekal Corporation, a company that offers the implimation of false memories to make people’s dreams and fantasy’s seem more real, they find that Douglas has in fact been to Mars before. This story goes a long way in explaining the nature of memory and reality. It shows that there are things that happen in a person’s life that they may suppress so far in their brain that we can start to confuse reality with fantasy.
Throughout the beginning of the story the protagonist Douglas Quail deals strictly with internal conflict, concerning his deep fantasy and dream of one day visiting Mars. However as he is reminded daily by his wife he is merely a common working class man who will never be able to accomplish this feat. At first Douglas refuses to believe this and says to himself that no matter what he will one day visit mars. As he slowly begins to realize that he indeed will not be able to travel to mars he seeks a secondary option. This is where he decides to visit a memory implimation company known as the Rekall Corporation. Upon visiting the Rekall Corporation he is faced with a much more challenging conflict, this is where the external conflict enters the story concerning the reality that he did in fact visit mars and interplan is going to attempt to kill him.

...cts arise because of the advanced technology that is present throughout the story. In this story the author Phillip K. Dick tries to explain the dangers but also the advantages of having such advanced technology, and the complications of the human mind when it comes to dealing with complex memories. Although the reason Douglas finds himself with such problems and dangers that come from the technology that he has been presented with throughout his life, he is also able to use this technology to his advantage and eventually save his life. Also the story explains how people can suppress memories so far back in their brain that they can begin to confuse their dreams with the reality of events that have actually occurred in their own lifetime. This happens in the most extreme way in the case of Douglas Quail in the story “we can remember it for you wholesale”
