Festivals as a Celebration of a Christian Event
Festivals are a celebration of a Christian event. The are seven main
festivals these are: Advent, Christmas, the Epiphany, Ash Wednesday,
Lent, Easter, Ascension Thursday and Pentecost Sunday.
Advent is the first and most important in the church’s year. Advent is
a period of four weeks that some Christians use as a countdown to
Christmas. Advent is really a time of preparing for the coming of
Christ. To celebrate Advent we have Advent customs. One of these
customs is the Advent Wreath and this is probably the most important
custom. On the Advent Wreath there are five candles. These candles are
lit every Sunday in Church until the last Advent candle is lit on
Christmas Day. Also a small prayer may be said before the candles are
lit. One candle is purple and it represents the Saints. The next
Candle is pink and is lit to symbolise the joy of the third Sunday of
Advent that is meant to remind people that their preparation may be
hard but it is a feast of joy. The White Candle symbolises the birth
of Jesus. The wreath also has other symbols including the circle of
Evergreen that suggests the eternal life of God. The Holly represents
the crown of thorns that Jesus wore when he was crucified and the
Berries on the Holly represent the blood that Jesus was to shed for us
at the end of his life.
The next Advent Custom I’m going to explain is the Advent Calendar.
This is a twenty- four or twenty-five day calendar of which you open
the doors of the days and normally there is a picture which has
nothing to do with Christmas but pictures of animals or cartoons
which helps you countdown to Christmas. Every day there should be
something new behind the doors. These days companies like Mars and
Cadbury’s put chocolate behind the door.
Another Advent Custom is the Jesse Tree. This shows the ancestry of
Jesus Christ as a tree with all the famous ancestors of Jesus going

Las Posadas is a Mexican holiday that is like Christmas for the United States. It was originated in Spain and lasts for nine days. This holiday begins on December sixteenth and ends on December twenty-fourth. This is also a catholic holiday but most people in Mexico celebrate it. This holiday was thought to be started in the sixteenth century by “St. Ignatius of Loyola or Friar Pedro de Gant in Mexico.” In Mexico they have a tradition where they put a candle in a paper lampshade. Then they would take the lampshade with the candle inside it and went outside to sing a song, allowing Joseph and Mary to be recognized and allowed to enter the world. This is still a tradition today but one thing has changed from around when it was started. It, for some people, celebrated it in a church instead of the family’s home. There is a thing that is common for both the United Stated and Mexico. They both sing Christmas carols, they go along to houses or in a church and sing Christmas songs. On these days the children will break piñatas to get the candy and prizes inside. They also so another thing ...
A religion is generally regarded as a set of values and beliefs by which people live their lives both practically and morally; through acknowledgement of some form of higher being or divine power. At the time of European settlement, the Aboriginal people (Australia’s first inhabitants) followed their own religious beliefs in spirits behind the forces of nature. During the 1800’s, European settlers brought their traditional religious values and churches to Australian shores. These included the Church of England (now Anglican), Methodist, Catholic, Presbyterian, Congregations, Lutheran and Baptist churches. Further migration influences contributed to the re-shaping of Australia’s religious affiliations over subsequent decades. The aftermath of World War II brought upon a significant increase in numbers of the Orthodox churches, the establishment of Reformed bodies, growth in the number of Catholics and the creation of ethnic parishes among many other denominations. But more recently, immigration from South-East Asia and the Middle East has enabled the growth of Buddhist and Muslim communities; also increasing the ethnic diversity of Christian denominations. In order to get an idea of different views 26 Australian’s were selected and surveyed; 10 males and 16 females, each placed in age brackets. The inequality in sexes may skew the data slightly, but the effect would be so minor that it is almost unrecognisable.
With the end of October and the beginning of November, two historically celebrated holidays come to pass. Each holiday has been celebrated for centuries, and each one continues to have a large impact on society. Interestingly, they developed in two separate civilizations from different hemispheres and occur around the same time. The two distinct holidays of Halloween and Day of the Dead both share similar origins and a focus on spiritual aspects and yet have still remained unique celebrations that continue to largely impact culture.
The teaching of Jesus Christ is hard for some cultures to grasp. Humanity is prone to question everything. How people use their worldview plays a key role. Most Christian accept the Gospel message at it full value and yet with teaching from a church they only accept part of the message. Now it seems like progressively that people are turning away from God. Since people cannot see Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and God they just suppress prier teaching from the Bible. In some cultures the Bible is looked at as a taboo.
Meant to signify Allison’s death, Clark’s yet to come memorial for her, and the cancer that is killing her. Vigil candles are used in numerous ways, but one of the most common is found in Catholicism. The vigil lights (in combination with prayer), are used to memorialize the dead and take place before the funeral (usually overnight). Offering comfort, hope, and closure to those morning a death. Candlelight vigils don’t only belong to the Catholic church, they take place in many cultures, too. Moreover, they have become a popular way to unite people over disease awareness, various causes, to people uniting over socially impactful deaths in their community. It often brings people together to take solace in each other, and pay tribute to the
Scissors, Paper, Rock! For my first cultural event, I attended the University Performing Dancers rendition of “Scissors, Paper, Rock!”. This dance performance took place in University Hall here on campus. This performance is considered a cultural event because the game Rock, Paper, Scissors is an ancient game that many different cultures have claimed to invented.
The fire ant gets its name from both its bright red color and its sting which can be described as a “burning” sensation. Originally found in the tropics of South America, these ants have now spread worldwide and are found ear moist areas. In times of trouble, these ants cluster together and are able to form rafts capable of floating on water. Without joint efforts by each ant in the colony this wouldn’t be possible. The same can be said about human beings specifically in traditional European lives. Rituals and festivals provide an escape from the realities of life and allow the community to come together as a collective unit to complete a common goal.

Easter is a religious holiday that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ three days after his death by crucifixion about 2,000 years ago. For Christians, Easter is a day of religious services and the gathering of family. In many churches Easter comes after a season of prayer, abstinence, and fasting called Lent. This is observed in memory of the 40 days' fast of Christ in the desert. In Eastern Orthodox churches Lent is 50 days. In Western Christen religions Lent is observed for six weeks and four days.
