Typically ecofeminism is associated with liberal feminism, but they do not believe in the equality of both men and women. “Eco feminists do not seek equality with men as such, but aim for a liberation of women as women,” Eco feminists argue that women and nature are culturally tied to each other. Linguistically and symbolically feminist are similar to ecological issues and can help to reshape them. Eco feminists believe that the association with women and nature is a main cause for the sexism and naturism over the centuries. “…they disagree about whether women’s connections to nature are primarily biological and psychological or primarily social and cultural,” (Tong 252).
The reason why women are scarcely mentioned throughout the history textbooks are because women are conformed in their status of the private sphere. Women are related to “nature” considering their roles in society such as child bearers and housewives. Culture is considered as a sustaining force that transcends nature to create and control a new interest. Because of this “nature” status put on women, they are considered inferior to men. However, this is not the case for everyone and not all society understands culture and nature like westerners do.
Women were not seen in the past as they are seen now. They were seen as the weaker, less knowledgeable sex. They had to listen to their husbands and they had no say in anything. We are reminded of this when we read “The Yellow Wallpaper.” Charlotte Perkins Gilman was an activist for women’s rights. With this being said, I believe Gilman’s purpose for writing “The Yellow Wallpaper” was to show the readers women do have rights, this is a changing world, and women don’t have to listen to everything their husband or significant other tells them to do.
Jessica Valenti also supports the idea of people misunderstanding feminist movement “For some reason, feminism is seen as super anti: anti-men, anti-sex, anti-sexism, anti-everything” (2). She argues that feminism does not attempt to go against something or someone, but to make people feel better of who they are and what they can do in life. Feminism is about making people be proud of who they are and “to see through the bullshit that would make [them] think there’s something wrong with [them]” just because someone said so. Thus, both writers’ definitions of feminism exclude the common incorrect belief that feminism is directed against men. However, while bell hooks sees feminism as one of the ways “to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression” (13), Jessica Valenti claims that feminism helps women to fight stereotypes they face and feel more confident in spite of the
These expectations led to a constant schedule for these women, making it so their whole life was already planned ahead for them while they had to act as their social calendars suggested. Through out history women have been considered the weaker sex. Even in a multitude of religions, women are not treated equally. Think of the women in Saudi Arabia, they cannot even drive a car by themselves and are certainly not considered equal to men. The largest religion in the world, Christianity, even discriminates against women, “...suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence” (Timothy 2:12).
There are no accurate statistics on how many women attempt or succeed in committing suicide each year rather than live with their pregnancies. Women will continue to have abortions with or without government legislation, but with legislation, the conditions under which they have their abortions can be sanctioned and observed. The role of family in abortion is that preservation of family has a profound impact on some women's decision whether or not to have an abortion. Some women have learned to protect and preserve each and every member of her family, including an unborn child. For these women abortion is not even a consideration, but many do live their lives harboring resent towards their husbands and the child for forcing her to have a child she did not necessarily want.
Many people might found it wrong to get married or have children later on in life, but it is quite the norm today. If it was not for Betty Friedan speaking up, women would continue to try to be the perfect housewife. It is the norm today to finish college, and then decide to get married and/ or have children. It is good to know that many women can have the opportunity to do and be able to do whatever they want to do, especially to their own bodies. However, Friedan was fortunate enough to have a mother who wanted her to come out of her comfort zone and to be able to be a change in the world.
Identity is not created based on perfection; it created based one’s qualities and unique choices. If a young woman follows and tries to create an identical identity for themselves to make an ideal identity themselves, it take away their chance of creating their own unique identity. Sometimes the desire of an ideal identity comes from the lack of good and stable family background. Alicia, a twenty-eight-year-old Hispanic woman interviewed by Bell, whose desire to have an ideal family stopped her from expressing her sexual desire. Bell discusses the reason of Alicia 's choices of an ideal identity, which is “the stability, structure, and love of a traditional family seems to afford all of the experience Alicia herself lacked in her upbringing.
Women were not allowed to do anything against their husband, but yet there were many women who endured physical punishment by their husbands. There is so many more questions that have sparked my interest in the women who live in the Hinduism tradition. A woman will probably not even have the choice to live in the Hinduism tradition, without being shut out by her
“With that being said I don’t consider myself a feminist but I am pro-choice. I give advice and let others learn from experience. A person is going to do what they want so I don’t push my opinion off on others.” While others have a clue to what a feminist is but do not fully understand their purpose. “I think a feminist is someone who wants more equal rights for women but take it to the extreme,” said Nia. I explained to her that a feminist does not have to be an extreme activist.
