Power is a curious force that if left unchecked will undoubtedly become corrupt. It could be argued that the aim of government is to make sure that power does not rage forth in this monstrous way by keeping it under control. In an excerpt from Federalist 51, James Madison explains that in order to check power in the United States Government, it must be distributed and separated. This task is straightforward enough, but to add another level of security, Madison continues that once the power is separated, each power must control, not only the people, but also its self at the same time. This added nuance is a difficult one to achieve; yet it is entirely integral to our current system of government.
