As I mentioned earlier in first week's discussion, I work in retail based automotive environment and we sell after-market automotive products to automotive mechanic shops, any individual mechanic or DIY(do it yourself) customers. There is, of course, some product standard that we have to follow. As we sell a lot of automotive products ranging from small 1 ampere relays to big rebuilt engines, we follow product standards set by different organizations depending upon what we sell. For example, most of the products are regulated by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and emission-related after-market automotive parts are regulated by United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) are the set of regulations issued by NHTSA. FMVSS maintains the minimum safety performance requirements for automotive parts. …show more content…

It is against the law to market a product which does not meet the minimum requirements mentioned in FMVSS. For emission related parts, it is regulated by EPA. Any after-market emission parts are subject to anti-tampering laws and may require certification and training if needed. Specialty Equipment Market Organization has compiled a "Black Book" which complies with safety regulations for emission related parts. Every aftermarket or OEM parts manufacturer has to register with NHTSA and strictly follow the product standards mentioned in FMVSS. If a manufacturer finds a defect in their parts, they have to immediately report that to NHTSA.
