America has reached a peak in its debate over gun control and it now comes the time to make the decision on whether or not Americans should be banned from the owning and manufacturing specific high-capacity semi-automatic weapons, otherwise known as assault weapons: including rifles, pistols, and shotguns. There are always two sides to each debate, those that oppose and those that support. In this case, do you support an assault weapon ban or perhaps you oppose this ban and feel that this violates the second amendment in the Constitution where it states that Americans have right to bear arms? Let me ask you this though, do you know all the facts and have you weighed all the opinions on each side so that you may make an educated decision? It is important that Americans understand what weapons are included in this ban for example, the ban does not included all semi-automatic weapons, why a ban on these high capacity weapons is necessary, and how many lives it could possibly save if it is passed into law.
What exactly qualifies a firearm to be considered a semi-automatic weapon? Semi-automatic weapons were first introduced in 1885. They were created to only fire one shot when the trigger is pulled. However, this firearm automatically ejects the case of the fired shot and immediately loads the next cartridge, making it easier and faster to fire the following rounds. These rapid fire weapons make up twenty percent of the three million privately owned firearms in America. In 2012 alone, nearly five million new semi-automatic firearms were sold. These outstanding numbers of assault weapons flood our streets today. They have been proven to be easily accessible to dangerous, unstable people and have taken the lives so many Americans; men, women and children. As a result of so many incidents with these firearms, Congress is trying to pass a ban prohibiting the use of assault
