Characteristics of an Operating System:
Multi-User: A Multi-User is two or more users that have individual accounts that allow them to work with programs and peripheral devices at the same time.
Multitasking: Multitasking is when a computer is able to run more than one application at the same time, for example have Microsoft Word and Internet open at the same time.
Multiprocessing: Multiprocessing is when an Operating System can support multiple Computer Processing Units (CPU’s)
Multithreading: Multithreading is when a program can complete multiple tasks at the same time. It is similar to Multitasking but allows multiple threads instead of processes. Also since each thread is controlled separately, it can lead to less crashes due to the fact

Family safety will give your kids independence as well as still letting you keep an eye on them and what they are doing. Another Feature on this Operating System is the programmes that you get such as the ones you have always used like PowerPoint, Excel and Word. You can use your mouse and keyboard to organise documents and stuff into specific folders on the desktop. There is a new Graphical User Interface (GUI) design, the start screen is designed more like an mobile app or an Xbox 360. This allows you to really customize and change your start up screen to make it personal to you. There is also a new thing called “One View” this means that when you are working on the desktop, all the applications that you have opened will appear in a task bar at the bottom of you monitor. This will include all the applications you have opened in desktop and the Windows Store from your start screen. Windows 8.1 works with a wide variety of different types of devices both input and output, including touch, mouse-and-keyboard or both. This new feature means that you can discover faster ways to switch between applications, shuffle documents and folders around and go smoothly form one place to another. There are many different versions of this Operating system for example “Windows 8.1”, “Windows 8.1 Pro”, “Windows 8.1 Pro Student” and “ Windows 8”. These will comprehend with the skills and ability that client users have. This will make there life using this Operating System a lot
People often feel as if they don’t have much time. To solve this, many people multi-task to complete several tasks at once. The definition of multitasking by most people would be, “performing two or more tasks at once,” which is generally the idea. The definition of multitasking according to Merriam-Webster is the performance of multiple tasks at one time. Multitasking often is a complex process and can use different parts of the brain, for example, a telephone operator needs to be able to talk to a client while working on the computer and that requires the occipital and temporal lobe of the brain.
...he internet and listening to music and doing other humble task at the same time, because one tasks will go to one of the processors and the music tasks will go the other processor unless the program is coded to use multithreading.
Multitasking, a practice used by many people to complete multiple tasks at once, seems beneficial to the user, but recent research shows that this practice causes more distractions. Alexandra Samuel argues in her essay, “‘Plug in Better’: A Manifesto”, that by getting rid of all of the distractions caused by multitasking, the time spent on the computer can be used more efficiently. As businesses in today’s world are using computers to help employees be more efficient in the workplace, each worker should only have to handle one task at a time to maximize their efficiency. Richard Restak argues in his essay, “Attetion Deficit: The Brain Syndrome of Our Era,” that by not diverting a person’s attention to multiple activities at once, such person
According to the survey of ten people, multitasking can generally be defined as doing multiple things at the same time. However, one person defined multitasking as “being able to focus and work on more than one assignment.” This definition brings up the word “focus,” which could change the meaning of multitasking. The addition of the word “focus” could be applying the APA’s idea that the brain switches its concentration to focus on one task at a time, but quickly switching from task to task during a short time period. This can be seen when someone ...
Have you ever drove down the road while trying to text some or while trying to put mascara on? Many students and workers have some form of a distraction when they perform tasks. This is just one example of multitasking. Most people think that they can do other tasks while doing their work at the same time but researchers disagree. Multitasking is used when someone jumps from one task to another while trying to pay attention at a certain challenging problem. When people multitask they activate a certain part of their brain. This part of the brain is called the prefrontal cortex and this is located in the frontal lobe. Before, a person can understand how the brain processes multitasking they must understand the anatomy of the brain and what parts of the brain are being used during multitasking.
Not long ago computers were non-existent in many homes. When computers were first introduced to the world, they were for the sole purpose of performing business functions. The only people who owned computers were large organizations. Eventually, computers were introduced into the homes of those who could afford to buy them. Today, just about everyone owns some form of system that they use daily to help manage their day-to-day operations. What many once survived without now seems impossible to do without. As technology continues to grow, it has a greater effect on families and the education system. Some companies such as Microsoft and Apple made it possible to reinvent a new form of technology that would change the world. Each company had some form of struggle and overtime had to keep up with the changes of time and the way people communicated. From the first day of its invention, organizations have had to steadily implement new operating systems to keep up with the demands of the people while staying afloat with competitors. The ways of life for many have changed as well as the way people communicate. It is evident that the history and uses of computers have changed the world but these computers could not perform without the operating systems. Various operating systems will be discussed, how they began and how they each changed since they were first introduced. Although, they all had a purpose each varied in how they performed and changed the lives of many and will continue in the near future.
Multitasking is defined as doing more than one thing at one time. Multitasking should be avoided when people should be paying attention. An example of multitasking is when people talk on a cellphone or are texting when they are driving, and that should be avoided! Other times when multitasking should be avoided is when there is a person speaking and people are paying more attention to their phone than to the speaker.
Today, multitasking is everywhere, and is very huge in many situations. We are guilty of, multitasking and how it has become a negative and positive impact on our lives. Nowadays, people prefer to divide people in two groups; people who masters can multitask, and those who cannot. Almost everyone place themselves in the former group, thereafter they put the rest of the people in the latter. I personally find myself multitassking many things at once, and never pay attention to it. I believe that doing more than one thing is okay. In order to get things done faster multitasking seems like the answer to the question. In Tugend’s essay, she uses certain techniques that caught the reader’s attention, stating this as “you are reading this article, are you listening to music or the radio, Yelling at your children? Checking emails”? Of course, the reader was expected to read the essay. By persuading them to believe that, what she was saying was true.
which if left on your drive, cause extreme slow downs when you CPU is at work.
Multitasking is something we all do. With lack of time and needing to get things done fast we often find ourselves doing more than one task at a time. As a college student I find myself multitasking a lot more than I’d like to admit, but it has become such a hard habit to break. Multitasking can often make us feel more productive, but it may not be as efficient as we would like to believe. Multitasking may be causing us more stress, it can be dangerous and cause us problems, and it may cause us to waste more time than we realize and cause us to produce low quality work.
Windows 10 is an upcoming operating system from Microsoft. After windows 8 nightmare, Microsoft had to come up with a really good product which would secure the Microsoft operating system future. Microsoft, unveiled the net version of its operating system, Windows 10. I have watched the product presentation and its technical specs which I am going to discuss here. Each iteration of windows brings a lot of changes. Obviously, Windows 10 is no exception. What should we expect from the next OS from Microsoft? First thing is the “Start Menu,” the disappearance of the stat menu was quickly qualified as the worst mistake made by Microsoft with the release of windows 8. Fortunately the company has heard from its users, so the menu is returning in windows 10. Although this is not a novelty in the strict sense of the term, one cannot ignore the work done by the designers to refresh it. The layout of the start menu items in windows 10 has been redesigned, and the right space is now reserved for dynamic tiles that the user can have as it sees fit. Microsoft and incorporates elements of the inte...
Buffer overflow. This happens when the computer transmits more than the buffer can hold hence causing congestion as the data is dropped and a lot is lost. The adjacent memory spaces are overwritten and corrupted and can cause even the system to crash. Buffer overflow also known as buffer overrun can be avoided by having system checks regularly in order to detect and fix the overflow. The operating system responds through segmentation faults.
Multithreading is the ability of an operating system to run programs concurrently that are divided into sub parts or threads. It is similar to multitasking but instead of running on multiple processes concurrently, multithreading allows multiple threads in a process to run at the same time. Threads are more basic and smaller unit of instruction. Hence multithreading can occur within a single process. Multithreading can also be defined as a combination of microprocessor design and machine code which allows computer instructions to be carried out concurrently and the results to be combined in right logical order. Programs can execute multiple tasks simultaneously by incorporating multithreading. The real purpose of multithreading is to help in proper and resource effective utilization of the hardware and software resources. Multithreading provides concurrency as it enables many programs to run in parallel and execute simultaneously thus saving time and providing efficiency (Ball et al., 2011).
...space. It's accessible in 25 dialects. From the mid-1970s until the arrival of Windows XP, about 1 billion Pcs have been sent around the world.”(Windows). Microsoft has grown massively over the years, and they keep continuing to get better and better.
The problem that most users had with Microsoft Windows 10 was that it was a forced update. This made some users resentful towards Microsoft. This update was given under the guise of making the operating system better and more user friendly. When in actuality, some users found the update to be confusing and intrusive. Microsoft dumped 6 gb of data onto their customer’s hard drives without their permission and without giving them a choice to opt out. This led to many lawsuits filed in the US, with users stating their computers were being damaged and their data
