Fear is the true facilitator of failure. Our fears can cripple us in ways that we are unaware of at times. Prior to becoming a Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant, I worked as a Rehab Tech but, prior to that I worked many dead end jobs. Mostly retail positions with little to know opportunities for advancement. My husband would constantly encourage me to pursue higher education but, I always had excuses. Some legitimate but, most were just excuses. My favorite two excuses included “Next semester and….I missed the financial aid deadline” What he didn’t know at the time was that my fears of failure are what crippled my motivation toward returning to school. I knew that going back would help to improve my quality of life but, I was more concerned with the possibilities of failure than the potential I had for success. The truth was that, I hated math! When creating the board I had a patient with goals that included improving fine motor coordination (hand strength). We need good hand strength to complete everyday tasks such as combing hair, buttoning shirts/pants, unlocking a door, tying shoes, cooking and pretty much everything that we do in our everyday lives. I helped facilitate hand strength by having my write the trivia for the board on index cards as well as cut the index card to fit onto the board. I’ve also to address goals of increasing a person’s standing tolerance. Standing tolerance is a necessary part of being able regaining mobility. We need to be able to stand to complete everyday tasks such as taking a shower, getting in and out of various surfaces, and pretty much everything that we do in our lives.
