McCarthy vs Faulkner
Though Cormac McCarthy’s All The Pretty Horses and William Faulkner’s The Unvanquished are completely different, their style and plot techniques share more similarities than differences. All The Pretty Horses and The Unvanquished both depict the importance of honor in a persons life, whether it be honor through vengeance, honoring family, or honoring the tradition of woman, these two novels teach that honor can create a stronger person.
Vengeance plays an important role in both books. “At first Granny had not wanted to be dead either but now she had begun to be reconciled. We unwrapped it from the jagged square of stained faded gray cloth and fastened it to the board. ‘Now she can lay good and quiet,’ Ringo said.” (Page 184) Bayard and Ringo would be considered cowards and shunned from their plantation if they had not gone out to hunt down Grumby. Killing the murderer was the only type of justice served and accepted in society back then. John Grady Cole felt a great load of pressure on himself for Blevins’ death, and he knew it would be everlasting if he did not avenge Blevins’ death. John sets out with a passion to kill the captain and regain the horses, but realizes that the captain will have a tougher time staying alive and John let’s him go. This relieves the tension that Blevins’ death caused.
Honor towards family plays one of the most important roles in The U...
In these two stories “A Rose for Emily’’ by William Faulkner, and “Good Country People’’ by Flannery O’Connor, there is controversy between two women, Emily and Hulga. The protagonists, Emily and Hulga, deal with many things as in being from a small town and being unattractive. Emily and Hulga’s town show some sympathy throughout the stories. I believe they are sympathized for because, they struggle for love, then finally find love, and then lose love.
Even though the Day of the Dead and Halloween are both offshoots of all Saints' and all Souls' Days, their tone couldn't be more diverse. Halloween's images of skeletons and spirits emphasize on the frightening, gruesome, and ghoulish parts of the celebration. Society jolts, if delightfully, at the alleged terrifying spirits intimidating the living realm. On Day of the Dead, the focus isn't on personal menacing spooks, it's on celebrating with one's family alive and dead and recalling those who are no longer alive. It's on seeing death as another phase succeeding existence, rather being confronted with
Neither of the two men was the average “John Wayne” war hero that fights and dies for his country. This is what makes these two books stand out from other war books. Both of these books also were used during the Vietnam War as anti-war books denouncing the war. One major theme that comes up in both of these books is the theme of no free will.
There are many differences and similarities between Graham Greene’s “The Destructors” and D.H. Lawrence’s “Rocking Horse Winner.” One general difference is that in “The Destructors” the setting is in Great Britain, after the bombing had happened during World War 1, when the buildings were destroyed. The setting of “Rocking Horse Winner” is a suburban community located on the outskirts of Baltimore, Maryland. This one distinct difference affects the entire background of each story. The setting of “The Destructors” brings mood and feeling into the story were ass the setting of “Rocking Horse Winner” is just a general setting which could be changed and would not have a significant affect on the story as a whole. One general similarity between the two stories is that they both have a young boy as the main character, but the use of this character is very different in each story. The boy in “Rocking Horse Winner” is more innocent and unknowing of the evil the world can hold, he also hasn’t reached the rebellion stage of adolescence. In the other story “The Destructors” you have “T” who comes from a high class English family but is forced into poverty by the war, but he has already begun his rebellion against what is “good.” The similarities and differences between money, class, and family values in the stories are much more significant because they have more affect on each story and on the reader.
Changing attitudes towards race relations forced a change in the manifestation of racist ideologies. Bonilla-Silva also discusses the style of color-blindness. He asserts that due to the change in post-Civil Rights era thoughts on discrimination, whites had to change their language when talking about racism so as to promote white privilege in a non-racist manner. He argues that color-blind racism has “technical tools that allow users to articulate its frames”
Cormac McCarthy’s novel All The Pretty Horses depicts the constant search for justice in a world plagued with injustice. John Grady, while never given the justice owed to him, never gives up on his search for a place wherein he can find justice. Through John Grady’s experiences we can more clearly view the idea that, even though you may never find justice in the world sometimes it’s more important to focus on your quest for justice than your outcome.
This essay has compared the differences between the societies in these two novels. There is one great similarity however that both make me thankful for having been born into a freethinking society where a person can be truly free. Our present society may not be truly perfect, but as these two novels show, it could be worse.
Vengeance is considered to be an eye for an eye. One man takes another man’s father’s life, and then it only seems in reason that they should repay them back by killing their father’s murderer. Each son had killed in anger and emotion that was left unsolved and leaving all but one character Prince of Norway dead. The characters acted out blindly throughout the play and it ended in tragedy. After the death of multiple characters the readers will have a lesson learned that vengeance does not end in triumph.
In the current time, it seems like one cannot go a day without using at least one social media website. This might be especially true among groups of teenagers and young adults. Social media became a vital part of daily life that feeds people with several types of information constantly. Political news is a type of information that can reach the people through the means of social media. Since presidents are constantly seeking new strategies to increase their communication with the public in order to spread their political message, they utilize the different social media websites. Hence, social media became a platform to spread political message. It is not surprising that now the majority of political officials and candidates have social media accounts more than ever before, such as a Twitter account.
Some of the foods in the history of Halloween are pumpkins, turnips, apples, cake, nuts and kale. Turnips actually used to be carved instead of pumpkins, until the first Irish immigrants arrived in America, and found the much larger pumpkin. Apples were used by the Celts in divining “games”, and were seen as very powerful divining tools, especially when it came finding out who a marriage partner would be. The modern game bobbing for apples comes directly from this Celtic tradition. Cake, as was previously mentioned, was used as a “treat” for the people who would come around door to door. The same soul cakes were also offered to the spirits of the dead, believing that it would appease and nourish them during their long journey to the otherworld. The Celtic people also believed that unless the spirits were fed, they would harm the living. Nuts, especially chestnuts and walnuts, were considered to be very powerful divining tools. Kale, as well as cabbage and leeks, were also used as divining tools for telling the future. The amount of dirt that stuck to the stalk of the vegetables indicated the amount of fortune that one could expect from a mate (“Halloween Food
One important question that is raised by “See You Later” by Henry Kutner is, “Why is violence and death taken so light-heartedly?” As soon as Yancey heard of the death of his eight boys, “Yancey started to cackle. Finally, when he’ got. his breath back, he said, ‘Not them! Them varmints have gone plumb smack to perdition, right where, they belong. How’d it happen?’” (Kuttner p. 160). As seen by Yancey’s reaction, it did not seem as if the death of his eight sons mattered. The reason why this may have happened may be because of the tone that the whole story is written in. Kuttner injects amusing moments in the story to diffuse the tension. For example, Yancey clearly poses a threat to the whole world. Rather than coming up with a more sensible
However, when the war was over, and the men returned to their lives, society reverted back to as it had been not before the 1940s, but well before the 1900s. Women were expected to do nothing but please their husband. Women were not meant to have jobs or worry about anything that was occurrin...
The altars built for the spirits are one of the most important symbols of Day of the Dead. They are often decorated with symbols such as candles, to light the spirit’s way home, and cempasúchil, or marigolds, which are the native flower of the dead. Special foods such as el pan de muerto, or the bread of the dead, are placed on altars as offerings to the spirits. People also place their loved one’s favorite things, such as instruments, toys, and other foods. A popular Halloween decoration is a carved pumpkin, which is said to keep evil spirits out of your home. This is why we decorate our houses and costumes with scary things-to trick spirits or to scare them away. Halloween also uses skeletons as one of these symbols. However, Day of the Dead uses skeletons, or calacas, as a symbol for life after death. They are the most popular Day of the Dead symbol, and are often printed on another very important altar decoration, papel picado, a design cut into paper. While these Halloween symbols are more for fun, most Day of the Dead symbols are much more important to the
In order to explain, this we need to go back to the very beginning of this creepy holiday. Long ago, a people known as the Celts celebrated a holiday they called Samhain. The Celts lived two thousand years ago in what is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Northern France. Celts began each new year on November first; This is the day that ends the harvest and marks the beginning of winter, cold and hard, which many then feared they had not stored enough food to survive. With that in mind it is no small wonder that this time of year was often associated with death. So the day before, Samhain , Celts believed that this world and the Deadworld boundaries blurred and th...
When September ends and October begins, there is one thing on everybody's mind: «Halloween ». Halloween is around 2,000 years old and first originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain; The Celts had rituals to avoid ghosts coming to haunt them, including dressing up in terrifying costumes to scare the ghosts and get together to party on the evening of October 31st. Nowadays, Halloween is one of the biggest holidays along with Christmas. From the beginning of October, people decorate their whole house in the colors of Halloween, wear entertaining costumes and, you can hear disguised children go from door to door to ask for treats as they shout "Trick or treat !". While it is a very a fun holiday
