Understanding Fat: Syndrome X and Beyond In this lecture, it talks about fat and how it affects us and our bodies. There are two main different types of fat, saturated and unsaturated. Many types of saturated fat are found in meat and dairy products. These fats are hard to break down for cells, because of this, they tend to get tucked away and build up over time if worked off. Unsaturated fats are found in olive oil and other plant oils. These types of fat are readily consumed for energy. The difference between saturated and unsaturated fat or trans fat and polyunsaturated fat is the state it is in at room temperature. Saturated fat is solid at room temperature while unsaturated fat is liquid. The liquid fats are able to interact and provide …show more content…
In class, we learned that fat is a source of energy. We also learned about how there are two main types of fat, saturated and unsaturated. We learned that saturated fat is the “bad” fat and unsaturated fat is the “good” fat. Saturated fat is solid at room temperature and is harder for our cells to break down. Unsaturated fat is liquid at room temperature and is able to interact and provide instructions to genes. We learned that the fats we eat, builds up over time if it is not burned off by exercising. This lecture is a good way to show how fat affects our bodies and what happens if too much is consumed and not burned off. It tells us how fat builds up and the outcomes of that. I think that fat is both good and bad. Eating fat can give us energy. Although, if too much fat is consumed it may cause health problems. We all need fat. It surrounds our muscles. The fat is intimately connected with the muscle. This is called the adipose tissue. This tissue has the ability to communicate with other parts in our body. It provides our muscles with energy. But, if too much fat is consumed, it will start to build up and cause problems including obesity and major health problems like a heart
Although many individuals are uncertain about the increasing statistics associated with obesity, more than seventy percent of men and virtually sixty-two percent of women within the United States adult population are overweight or obese (Wilmore, Costill, & Kenney). Obesity refers to the condition of having an excessive amount of body fat. If an individual’s amount of body fat becomes too excessive, he/she is at a much greater risk of developing life-altering diseases such as heart failure, hypertension, type II diabetes, cancer, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, etc. (Wilmore, et al., 2008).
Fat is a word everyone is scared of now a days. No one wants a fat body. That is why people choose dieting so that they can lose excessive fat accumulated on their body. But shocking fact is that dieting makes a person gain more fat. When a person is on diet, his/her body knows that he/she is starving it and it will shut down and hold on to all stored c...
Two contributing factors to adult obesity are imbalanced nutrition more than body requirements and decreased or the lack of daily physical activity (Treas & Wilkinson, 2014). With individuals taking in more food than the body requires and decreasing daily physical activity the body will store the unused food as fat. Unbalanced diets and large portion sizes can contribute to this. A lot of individuals who live different lifestyles are guilty of eating foods that are convenient instead of what is healthy. I am also guilty of these food choices at times. Being obese can contribute to chronic diseases that can decrease an individual's health causing other underlying illnesses.
“There's a great metaphor that one of my doctors uses: If a fish is swimming in a dirty tank and it gets sick, do you take it to the vet and amputate the fin? No, you clean the water. So, I cleaned up my system. By eating organic raw greens, nuts and healthy fats, I am flooding my body with enzymes, vitamins and oxygen.”(Kriss Carr). Fats are a concentrated source of energy. Fats are needed in a diet for healthy skin and normal growth. Fats also carry certain vitamins to wherever they are needed in the body. They are a reserved supply of energy. Saturated fat on the other hand is a fat that consist of triglycerides, they contain only saturated fatty acids (carbon items that are fully saturated with hydrogen atoms). Saturated fats are the leading
Lipids are fat like substances that are found in blood and body tissues. Lipids are an important part of the membrane that surrounds every cell in the body, and they are also components of the nervous system. Good lipids activate genes and burn the calories they also increase the metabolism, and improve the insulin activity. Fats are important because they help the intestines absorb vitamins into the body. Fats provide structural components for cell membranes in the brain.Consuming too much fat from unhealthy food can cause the unused calories to be stored in the body and cause weight gain. Fats can cause
Wherever double bonds are formed, hydrogen atoms are disappear. Saturated fats are saturated because of hydrogen atoms. Unsaturated fats is the much better choice if compared with saturated and Trans fat. Some foods that contain unsaturated fats are avocado, nuts, and oils like olive, canola, and soybean. Unsaturated fats can be liquid at room temperature. Unsaturated has some health facts that are sort of caused by saturated fats. They can help lower your LDL. If you strive to keep your LDL level low it can reduce your chances of heart disease and stroke. It can help people with type 2 diabetes manage their diabetes. You should not consume more than 25% to 30% of unsaturated fats in your day to day
Fat is a member of the class of compounds called lipids. The lipids in foods and in the human body include triglycerides, phospholipids, and sterols. The most common fat is broken down into two types; HDL or High-Density-lipoprotein and LDL or Low-Density-lipoprotein. The different between HDL and LDL has implication for health of the heart and blood vessels. Improve LDL concentration in the blood are associated with high risk of heart attack, and improve HDL concentration are associated with low risk.
Saturated fats come from animal sources like steak, hamburger and pork. Unsaturated fats are derived from plants. There are also trans fats that are considered poison for the body. They raise the bad cholesterol in your body, and should never be included in a healthy diet. There are also fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6 that are good for a healthy body.
Body composition is one of the five health related fitness components and it is the percent body fat, bone, water and muscle found in your body. Although fat is associated with negative connotations, it has important functions in our body such as the cushioning of organs, shock absorption and temperature regulations. This ‘positive’ fat is known as essential fat, and the ‘negative’ fat is known as nonessential fat. The percent body fat is used to determine the total fat found in your body and it is based on gender and size of each individual. In the textbook “Concepts of Physical Fitness: Active Lifestyle for Wellness” by Corbin, he states that fat location influences health risk; based on where the fat is located you could be considered an apple or a pear. A person considered an apple has fat in the upper body. This is often found in men and in menopausal women. A pear shape, which is most common in women than men, has more fat located in the hips and upper legs. Corbin defines visceral fat as fat located at the core of the body (abdominal cavity), and subcutaneous fat as fat located under the skin.
Obesity harms the body in many ways. Obesity adds unnecessary weight to the body, through fat, and the unnecessary weight can add up to six extra pounds a year (Holguin 1). The disease also increases the amounts of cholesterol, salt, saturated fat, and trans fat in the body (Schoenstadt 4). The amounts of these extra substances vary between males and females because eating habits are different. Men consume about one hundred twelve extra grams of carbohydrates, while women consume only seventy five extra grams of carbohydrates. Men and women both consume about thirty five extra grams of fat. They both also consume about thirty grams of excess sugar (Bowman and Vinyard 164). When these extra substances add up, they can lead to diseases. Some of the diseases caused by obesity include type two diabetes, heart diseas...
Some fats are good for a person's health where other types can be detrimental. Fats are micronutrients which help the body regulate body functions as well as protect organs (Shulman, 2010, pg. 49). Omega-three fatty acids are found in enriched e...
One of the biggest problems of humanity nowadays is obesity. From some years until now, humans have been suffering from this eating disorder with more frequency. Obesity is when one has too much body fat, and is unable either by genetic or environmental factors to control it. This problem has become more frequent as the society of today is all about consumption, fast food, calories and lack of exercise, as a simple machine is able to do everything one is too lazy to do. This is a problem because worldwide obesity has nearly doubled since 1980 and obesity is the fifth leading risk of global deaths. As a whole, approximately 2.8 million people die per year because of obesity and this disease is the main cause of heart attacks and diabetes in the world.
Fat is often associated as one of the main causes of heart disease. But the fact is, not all types of fat have a bad impact for the health of the heart. -Fat polyunsaturated fatty acids or omega-3 called thus in fact has many benefits for heart health. This type of fat is easily broken down so that it will not be deposited in the body. In addition, omega-3 is also said to be reducing the excessive sugar levels in the blood.
Obesity and overweight have became a global problem in the last decade, according to the World Health Organization back in 2005 approximately 1.6 billion adults over the of age 15 were overweight, at least 400 million adults were obese and at least 20 million children under the age of 5 years were overweight. Experts believe if the current trends continue by 2015 approximately 2.3 billion adults will be overweight and more than 700 million will be obese. The scale of the obesity problem has a number of serious consequences for individuals and government health systems. Obesity is a concern because of its implications for the health of an individual as it increases the risk of many diseases and health conditions. Being obese means having so much body fat that your health is in danger. However, being fat is simply not an opinion. Having too much body fat can lead to many diseases. Obesity and overweight have become a global problem in the last decade.
Monounsaturated fat is the healthiest type of dietary fat. Monounsaturated fats are stable for high temperatures so this is why people use them for cooking as it is a healthier way for cooking. Monounsaturated fat is a double bonded carbon. It will be liquid when it is in room temperature but when it is in a cooled placed with a chill it will turn back hard and into a solid. An example for this would be olive oil. When you are eating a healthy diet in is important that you get some fat in your diet. Fats will help the body absorb vitamins into the body such as vitamins A, D, E and K. Monounsaturated fats help keep your heart healthy by reducing the cholesterol in your system.
