Personal Statement: Family Medicine
It all began when I was eight years, my father and I were waiting patiently in our community health center to see the doctor because I had a fever. A few minutes later, a young man stepped out from a wooden door wearing a long white coat with a stethoscope gently resting around his neck. I turned to my father and asked “Dad, is that an Angel”? My father replied, “No son that is the doctor we came to see”. This experience opened up my dream to become a physician. My decision to study medicine received more attention when I was in the tenth grade, and I realized the incessant lack of medical doctors in rural communities in Nigeria, which has resulted in high mortality, even from preventable diseases. In fact, some of my relatives were victims of this. This experience ignited a passion and desire within me to become an agent of positive change. As a result of this, I decided to become a physician so that I can help people with their health needs. A few years later, I secured admission into College of Health Sciences, Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria to study medicine.

Thus, family medicine will offer me great opportunities to pursue my strong passion of helping people with their health needs especially the underserved populations and communities. A vast and diverse field, family medicine provokes my interest and will continue to excite me throughout my career. As a result, family medicine is my choice of residency program considering the wide range of diseases and patient population covered as well as the broad scope of academic and clinical research opportunities available. I would like to practice anywhere in the United States after my residency
As a future Family Nurse Practitioner it is very important for me to provide health care services to the underserved population. During my undergrad studies at Lehman College, I was required to research a community to analyze its access to healthcare. In my findings, this particular community lacked primary care providers, over utilized the emergency room as a means of accessing health care services and had a higher mortality rate of preventable diseases compared to several communities with similar demographics. Working for New York City Health and Hospital Corporation will enable me to provide primary and preventative health care services to this community.
I was born in a small town of -----------of underdeveloped country of Bangladesh. I grew up speaking Bengali, wore traditional clothes, created intricate henna designs on women’s hands, and performed classical Bengali music. Since childhood, thought other than becoming a doctor never registered in my mind. My high grades in high school helped me to obtain admission in one of the most desirable place to learn Medicine, Mayemen Medical College.
The life of a successful physician is my ultimate pursuit due to its fulfilment of all of my personal desires: a complete knowledge of the human body, a desire to impact the world positively, and a yearning to lead a life dedicated to helping others. My personal drive towards medicine came about-in part -due to the passion both my parents possess for their jobs. This opened the doors of curiosity which led into further personal studies and exploration within the field. I would be an asset to medical school and the medical profession due to my absolute humanitarian motives, the profitable experiences that have helped me grow as an individual, and my passion for the sciences.
First and foremost I believe that education is the key to success. Continuing my education to become a family nurse practitioner has always been a lifelong dream of mine ever since I started out in the medical field eight years ago.
I am interested in pursuing the Physician Assistant (PA) degree because of my experiences both within the medical field and as a patient. These experiences have led me to believe that a team approach to patient-centered medicine provides the best and most comprehensive care possible. Further, the PA profession offers me the opportunity to continue my lifelong passion of helping others, giving back to my community, and provides me with further opportunities to teach.
I find myself privileged as I am the first generation from my family to complete Bachelor Degree. Therefore, "reaching perfection through adversity" is what inspired my journey of Physician Assistant studies. I am originally from small South-Asian country called Nepal, where I completed my High School education with science major. As a science student, I was always curious to know the cause, symptoms, prevention, and precaution of diseases. Unconsciously, I was trying to pursue medical profession. With a strong desire to help community and undeserved population, I got associated with organizations like: Red Cross and Rotary International during my High School education where I worked as a volunteer. These further strengthen my endeavor to pursue career in medical sector.
After over 15 years of working as a CNA and Caregiver, I decided that I wanted to continue my education in the medical field. In 2013 I took the first step towards gaining a better future with more experience as a medical professional. I enrolled into a Medical Assistant program at IBMC college of Longmont. It has been a long road and I am almost to the finish line having gained essential skills needed to move further into my career. It has been a grueling and eye opening experience for me being an adult learner returning back to school at 33 years of age. I persevered through these pass two years with courage and determination, never letting my short comings get the best of me. As far back as I can remember I had a strong affinity for science. I recall having an avid curiosity in biology and chemistry while I attended catholic school. Our congregation placed an emphasis on missionary work and social service, and growing up I felt very connected to that experience. Medicine as a profession was something I was exposed to early on as many of my family members are physicians. I became even more interested in medicine when as a teenager my dad became critically ill and I wanted desperately to know what was happening and what needed to be done to get him better.
I am a 26 year old medical graduate from one of the renowned medical schools in India. Currently, I am doing observership at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington DC. Journey for residency has been a long one that began thousands of miles away. I was born and raised in royal city of North India in a family of doctors, with both my parents working round the clock and my grandparents taking care of me. Our ancestors were peasants by occupation, but they had a vision to educate their children.
Education is neither linear nor static. It requires evolution and fluctuations. I received my undergraduate degree in Exercise Science at UNC Charlotte, and now it is time for a prime conversion to be made. Attending the Masters of Public Health program at UNC Charlotte would open the door for me to pursue my career aspirations in health care. Specifically, I am interested in epidemiological methods in community health. My ambition, perseverance, and work ethic have brought me to a high point, and enrolling in the Masters in Public Health program would raise that threshold even higher.
My goal in pediatrics revolves around determination to provide comprehensive and compassionate care. I want to be a part of pediatric residency program that offers the opportunity to train in a well-structured, well-administered with family like environment, where teachers love to instruct and direct us through their vast amount of knowledge. I know your pediatrics program would be a good fit for my passions and talents. I am confident that my pursuit of this career path is an invitation to an even fuller and more exciting life ahead.
The motivation to pursue Medicine as a career is frequently presented as a few typical clichés. Some say “I’ve always known that Medicine was the career for me.” While others tout “I was often sick as a child” thus “the hospital was an integral part of my life” while others use the typical “Dr. _______ changed my life and I always wanted to be just like him/ her”. While some these things ring true of my own life experience, there were numerous, sometimes unrelated factors, that have influenced my decision and fueled my desire to pursue Medicine. However, I am particularly drawn to Internal Medicine because of its complex problem solving opportunities, emphasis on team centered care, and the never-ending learning opportunities it affords.
From a young age, I was drawn to the healthcare field, not because the amount of money doctors, nurses and other health professionals made, but because of the dedication and contentment I saw on their faces helping someone in need. Growing up everyone wanted to become a doctor or a nurse and as a little child being a doctor or a nurse was a profession many parents wanted their child to pursue as a career. Needless to say, I fell into that category because I had high hopes that one day I will become a nurse. However, that dream came to a halt.
Medicine is a very complex and interesting felid, it 's constantly changing with the new advancements being made all the time. My interest in medicine came at a young age from going to various doctor’s appointments for myself and family members. I found it fascinating how doctors took care of people. I also enjoyed the interaction between the doctor and patient, whether it was a positive or negative interaction.I was very inspired by doctors and wanted to be like them. But I didn’t fully consider a career in medicine until I began high school.
Throughout my life, I have worked towards one goal which is to become a doctor. Medicine offers the opportunity for me to integrate different scopes of science while trying to improve human life. Medicine has intrigued me throughout all my life because it??s a never ending mystery and every answer has questions, and vice versa. Upon entering my career, I had assumed that professional and financial success would surely bring personal fulfillment. This realization triggered a process of self-searching that led me to medicine. The commitment to provide others with healthcare is a serious decision for anyone. As I examined my interests and goals, however, I underwent a process of personal growth that has propelled me towards a career as a physician. A career in medicine will allow me to integrate thoroughly my passion for science into a public-service framework. Since childhood, I have loved acquiring scientific knowledge, particularly involving biological processes. During my undergraduate studies, I displayed my ability to juggle competing demands while still maintaining my academic focus; I have succeeded at school while volunteering part time, spending time with family and friends, and working part-time. To better serve my expected patient population, I worked over my English and Korean language skills. I have come to discover that a job and even a good income, without another significant purpose, will not bring satisfaction. I planed to utilize my assets, namely my problem- solving affinity, strong work ethic, and interpersonal commitment, to craft a stimulating, personally rewarding career in medicine. I have taken stock of myself, considering my skills, experiences, and goals. I have looked to family and friends, some of whom are doctors, for advice. Because of this self-examination, I have decided to pursue a career in health care. The process has been difficult at times but always illuminating. Throughout it all, I have never lost confidence - the confidence that I will actively absorb all available medical knowledge, forge friendships with fellow students, and emerge from my training as a skilful and caring physician.
