Recommended: The role of family in our society

She is in a contest to grow the healthiest prettiest flower possible and she has entered the contest every year for the past 5 years and she always falls short of first. This year she swears she is going to win first. She imagines a seed, then she imagines planting that seed. She envisions herself taking care of this seed every day until it is a beautiful flower. She starts by planting the seed in extraordinary rich soil in an old pot her mother gave her. She then plants the pot in a spot with a lot of sunlight. She waters the seed as often as it needs it. Once the seed starts to sprout she trims the blossoming flower and she protects the newly sprouted flower from pests. In this story she is resembling what a family does. Family takes care of you, it protects you, and it makes sure you’re presentable. Most of all family wants you to win first, it wants you to be number one, and it wants you to be the best you can be. Family contributes to an individual’s identity by pushing that person to pursue her own identity, create goals for herself, and strive to achieve them. The role of a family is to be there to guide you and provide for you until you’re old enough and wise enough to venture out on your own. The ideal family to think about when it comes to roles is a nuclear family with a mom and a dad, because the roles in these situations are easier defined. Your dad will teach you how to fish and how to lie to mom when you get back about how big the fish that you caught actually were. Your dad will teach you how to drive a car and teach you about getting pissed off at other drivers when they don’t go fast enough or forget to use a turn signal. Your dad will teach you how to stand up for yourself by training you to throw a few punches... ... middle of paper ... ...re. Imagine yourself as the girl in the beginning of the essay you’re going to want that flower to grow to be better than the last. You’re going to treat that flower better than the last one. It is the same in families as a parent to someone you’re going to want them to end up better than you did in life, not just because that’s the right thing to do, but because they are your legacy and everyone will judge you on the way decide to influence them. You’re going to want to treat them way better than you were ever treated because you don’t want them to relive the same things that you did. As a good parent, you put your experiences, your morals, your ticks, and your values on a plate and hand it to them and let them choose whether they swallow them or not. Families are there to lead you on the best path possible, but they only hold your hand so long before they let go.

    For most people family is one of the most important parts of life. For they are the people who raised you and taught you things needed in life. For most of us we have a connection with are family that is unparallel in life, which is the reason for are undying love. At times though there is a point at which we take are family for granted like they will always be around. Parents might do things that are not agreed upon by the children, yet the parent thinks it is in the child's best interest. Sometimes it might not even be the best thing to do in that situation, yet parents have a true desire to protect their children from the dangers of the world. On the other hand, children do not always listen to the advice their parents give them and can get themselves into a lot of trouble. Anyway you look at it, most of the time we do not realize what we have until it is not longer with us. Many times we do take our family for granted and when one passes away there are many things we wish we could have said or done to show them are love. The play "Into The Woods," by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine is a direct example of how families treat each other. There is conflict ranging from hating sisters, to protective mothers and a disagreeing husband and wife. In the end lives are lost, family are in pain and those left realize that they need to treat their family better and hold on to the loved ones that they have. Families do encounter many difficult choices together, but they also must solve the problems together, and keep peace within the family, because bad choice will be regretted when those loved ones are not around longer.

    The movie begins with the family and parenting styles concept of child development by introducing the audience to the main character James and his parents. James lives in a two-parent household with his authoritative parents who are providing him with warmth, love, and encouragement (Levine & Munsch, pp. 521-522). This concept of parenting styles is shown as the movie begins and James is seen spending time with his parents. Then suddenly, James’ world changes and he is abandoned as a result of his parents being killed. This causes James to become orphaned and forced to live with his authoritarian aunts, Spiker and Sponge. Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge are very controlling towards James and expect him to obey their rules without allowing him to express his feelings. This authoritarian behavior is seen throughout the movie. Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge are also uninvolved, neglectful, and abusive, using verbal and physical punishment on James when they feel it’s necessary, which is also seen throughout the movie (Levine & Munsch, p. 522). These behaviors cause James to develop lower self-esteem, show less intellectual curiosity, and feel lonely and afraid, which are typical outcomes of an authoritarian parenting approach (Levine & Munsch, pp. 521-523).
