An individual needs it for personal purpose like networking and sometimes Facebook is even utilized it in classroom; Social movement needs Facebook to spread its ideology; Our modern society needs it to united people together. Even though Facebook sure did bring some benefit to us, the disadvantage of it is overwhelming and should not be overlooked. I claimed that Facebook is harmful. It’s not only terrible to individual because it damages the quality of our daily offline conversation, but it has been used by authoritarian regimes as a tool to control people. What’s worse, exposure to Facebook which serves mostly entrainment purpose, has led us unable to think critically and seriously. …show more content…
It’s often used on children getting attached by another child on the Internet. Nowadays, it’s not only limited to the usage of teenager bullying another but sometimes government bullying a citizen. According to Katy Pearce who is a media scholar studies specifically about Azerbaijan, the government of Azerbaijan uses Facebook to create false content about activists in order to personally attack them. Government employ people who are expert in using Facebook posting information insulting activist who didn’t joined the army because of physically reason, calling them traitor of the country. Some may argues that we lives in the new networked society, thus with the helped of Facebook technology, activists can spread the ideology of their cause, reach out to more people who have similar interest. Facebook also helped activist gather information more easily. Even though information travel quickly through the use of Facebook, it changes the traditional methods of movement. Utilizing social media like Facebook is categorized as connective action which is loosely organized online when compared to tradition way of movement. Connective actions "have been criticized as 'mere clicktivism ' that is unlikely to have the same impact as old-fashioned movements and parties. " (Bennett) The idea of clicktivism implies that people seeing movement online, in this case Facebook, and then "like" and share to our own social network, feeling like we have done some good when in reality we have not done anything substantial to make a change. Therefore, Facebook or any other social media is not a effective tool to use for
The article ‘Web of Risks’ by Brad Stone, is about how young adults misuse social media and there are consequences. Cameron Walker, a sophomore at Fisher College had organized a petition dedicated to getting a campus security guard fired and put it on Facebook. Marc Zuckerberg designed Facebook in 2003 and it is a well-known website used worldwide. On the Facebook page Walker wrote that the security guard harassed students and needed to be eliminated. His plan backfired due to his use of wording and it came off threatening so he was expelled. Social media is looked at as a way to express yourself. Different social networks are used such as Facebook, Bebo, and Myspace. On these sites sometimes personal life is published,
As technology progress, humans evolve to the advanced technology and enhance our lives via technology. We connect to our families, friends and others through social media such as Facebook. Social media takes up a huge part in our lives. Social media infest us with information that are relevant and irrelevant to us. Marry Marrow wrote, “It was Facebook that changed the face of e-communication; in fact, it was the first electronic social media” (para 1). She assumes that Facebook is playing a huge role in electronic communication. In the journalist Maria Konnikova, “How Facebook makes us unhappy?”, Konnikova divulges many aspects of people on social media through researching and experience, and finds how social makes us unhappy. I agree with Konnikova findings after reading her article. In addition, she concludes that if you are engaged, active, and creative you will not sorrowful on Social media, however if you are passively browsing and defuse to engage, you
It is also when individuals use technology to spread rumor about another person to defame or humiliate them. Cyber harassment came about with the increase technological advancements and also the birth of social media has contributed to it as well. In the online article, Students Warn Peers about Cyber Bullying by Dawn Turner Trice. Trice writes about a 17 year old high school student by the name of Tiffany Witkowski who quit Facebook after getting cyberbullied. Tiffany tells Ms. Trice that, "They would go to my boyfriend 's page, and the next day at school, people would say, 'Oh, you and your boyfriend saw whatever movie or did whatever, I never felt physically threatened. But I felt emotionally threatened. I had just recently moved from Arizona. I had a family tragedy, and I said, 'Why is this happening to me? ' I needed emotional stability, so I just got rid of Facebook." Social media sites like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook are useful for getting in touch with lost friends and family, but, it still has it negatives such as Cyber bullying, sexual predators, and so many other
However, as far as I am concerned, the above authors fail to mention the positive effects Facebook has on our lives. Facebook is also very useful. It enables us to keep in touch with friends and family all around the world. A modern journalist, Adam Piore in his article, “What Technology Can’t Change About Happiness,” also argues that “The overall effect of technology is to overcome the constraints of time and location that would have proven insurmountable before” (Piore 9). Piore’s purpose here is to tell people that technology can be a good thing as well. I also believe the same: with the video call function, we are able to see each other’s face and talk with ease. If some people are not familiar with video call, they can even voice message others, making communication easier while reducing the hassle of typing. No doubt, Facebook has greatly changed our lives with both positive and negative effects. And I also believe that it is when we find the balance between technology and relationships can we enhance our happiness level and relationship with people. That is, we need to go out and have face-to-face conversations with people while using technology to help us keep connection with
This summer if you were on social media you heard about the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. The concept was simple, just film yourself dumping a bucket of ice water over your head, challenge your friends to do the same, and donate ten dollars to the ALS Association. Opt out and donate one hundred dollars (Madison). Many Americans did not know what ALS was and by putting this challenge on social media has brought tons awareness to this devastating disease. Activism used to be taking action to bring social change, people in the 1960s used to gather in front of community centers and protest and or speak about their issue or cause. Now even though people still gather together it is much easier to use the internet. Hundreds of social media applications
Social media allows you and your friends to publicly share photos, talk, make plans, and give out information about yourself. Those were all positives but could easily be negatives as well. When you receive a friend request on Facebook, the profile pic used could easily be faked and so could the person’s identity. By putting something on social media, you allow others to gain access to your photos, messages, arranged plans, and even your address, depending on what’s on there. Social media effects society in both positive and negative
Majority of the public tend to ignore the fact that it is different to chat online and to talk personally. The main negative impact social media brings is that facial expressions and body languages were not available while chatting through it, therefore, ‘people don't see the impact of what they write,’says Beth Yoho,( cited in Tarshis 2011, p16). This is why most people are more expressive online. Although it sounded like a good thing, more than often this result in them abusing the power and over time transformed them into cyber bullies. According to Tarshis (2011,p19), lots of kids act differently on facebook than they do in person because the person they are referring to was not right there. The emergence of cyber bullying is due to the assumption of the bullies that they have the rights to do misdeeds without the acknowledgement of the third parties. Unlike face-to-face or physical bullying that requires strength, cyber bullying can only be done by a few simple keystrokes. Hence, cyber bullying is undoubtedly a simple action. Research states that cyber bullying in long term result in the victims having a ‘....a positive correlation with drug and alcohol abuse, were more likely to suffer from anxiety and depression, and have lower
The 21st century has brought a lot of modern ideas, innovations, and technology. One of these is social media. The invention of Facebook has completely changed the way we communicate with one another. Instant messaging, photo sharing, and joining online groups have created a way for families and friends to connect. Some argue that Facebook is the greatest invention however, while it is seemingly harmless, Facebook has created an invasion of privacy. The accessibility of Facebook and its widespread use has created privacy problems for users, teens, and interviewees by allowing easy control to viewers.
The second plight of this generation is the misuse of the social media giant Facebook. This network was made to connect people from across the world to one another, but this generation has made it into something completely different. It has become a bulletin board of hate and jealousy. The website gives many great things, but those great things can become perverted. It provides an anonymity so that bullies can hide behind a computer monitor and ridicule people that in the real world they would never have the gall to try to hurt.
In mere minutes, any active user can access information and associations regarding various causes, such as the riots happening in Egypt and the Middle East. Teenagers, in the Middle East, used their Facebook accounts to campaign the “Day of Rage” in Saudi Arabia. Helping to set the Arab riots in motion, the event demanded elections, freedom for women, and the liberation of political prisoners. The activists’ goals to bring democracy to Egypt and removing Hosni Mubarak, Egypt’s fourth president from 1981 to 2011, still continue and perhaps with the assistance of Facebook they will accomplish these ambitions. The causes campaigned through Facebook have served as a fundraise...
A person’s life is reflected on Facebook. Because so much of someone’s life is on Facebook, anyone can have a sense of what is going on in their life. This is beneficial for parents away from their children in college or just away from the nest. A visual image is more attractive than reading a lengthy blog about an individual's day. With Facebook someone can post albums at a time and can share a special event that just recently occurred. Instant messaging has improved the speed that users can communicate with each other. If they see that their friend is online all that needs to be done is a message with the word “Hey.” Facebook allows for users to connect with friends time zones away.
In this day and age, many individuals simply cannot go without some sort of socialization. Specifically speaking, most participate in online social networking sites. The most popular and used one is commonly known as Facebook. Facebook was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg. By 2007, Facebook had over 21 million users, adding up to 1.6 billion page views every single day. The typical user spends over twenty minutes per day on Facebook and two thirds of the users log in every day at least once. It is not questionable as to why many people have a Facebook account. Facebook is generally efficient, easy for socialization, and not difficult to manage. Most organizations are affiliated with Facebook, as “almost 22,000 organizations had Facebook directories,” as of November 2006. A year after that in 2007, Facebook was named the seventh most popular website (Ellison 1). However, with anything well known, many oppose to using Facebook and hold criticism against the popular network. There are many flaws in the website and the relationships it starts online. Facebook is risking dangerous activities, ignoring privacy laws, and demeaning healthy socialization.
... led to a diversification of the people who create and maintain them. This can be anyone. Putting personal information into the hands of a stranger is risky outside of the Internet, but even more so online. The ease and speed of the mobility of information means no information is safe on Facebook. Anyone who can see it can copy, save, or redistribute the information at will. A broad and deep aggregate source of information makes search and retrieval of anything posted on Facebook quick and easy. If somebody wants information about you they know how and where to look. Finally, this information can be passed along and analyzed in order to draw conclusions about you and your lifestyle. These can be stereotypical and false. Facebook and other social media sites, and more broadly information technology in general has greatly impacted our lives and our right to privacy.
Facebook is beneficial to one's social life because they can continuously stay in contact with their friends and relatives, while others say that it can cause increased antisocial tendencies because people are not directly communicating with each other. But some argue that Facebook has affected the social life and activity of people in various ways. With its availability on many mobile devices, Facebook allows users to continuously stay in touch with friends, relatives and other acquaintances wherever they are in the world, as long as there is access to the Internet. Users can upload pictures, update statuses, play games, get news, add people, like and share photos, videos, memes
Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook in 2004 and its sole purpose is to give people the power to share and connect with the world. With 1.23 billion monthly active members, Facebook has certainly surpassed all other social sites. To put it in perspective that is roughly one-sixth of the entire world’s population. According to his book, Introduction to Digital Literacy Mark D. Bowles (2013) stated that Facebook is “the leading social networking site” where you can update your status, share information like photos, find friends and establish networks (pg. 184). This is exactly why Facebook is so popular amongst other social sites.
