Facebook is an online social networking service. Its website was created by Mark Zuckerberg, who was studying psychology, with his Harvard College roommates and fellow students, on February 4, 2004. Facebook was created as a way to communicate with their fellow students, but later expanded it to other colleges. It gradually added support for students at various other universities and later to high-school students. In 2006, Facebook was opened up to anyone with a registered e-mail (Phillips, 2007). It’s hard to believe that Facebook has been up and running for over eleven years now. I never knew that it even existed until one of my friends moved to Germany requested my friendship through email. In 2010, they estimated that Facebook memberships were 57% females and 43% men. They talked about how men and women use Facebook differently. Women tend to have more friends than men, which indicate several things. Women are more likely to connect with multiple people and communicate more with others. Women often share post more from others than men. Women are more likely to like a post and leave a comment. They are more likely to leave an emotional response whether it’s positive or negative. Women are more likely to focus more on fashion, retail, food and family. Men are more likely to like a post and move on. Facebook has become so important in our lives that we don’t have to be with someone face to face to have conversations or to keep in touch. We need to stop and think about our actions and how we treat others. When walking into a store, restaurant or watching people on the streets, they have their eyes on their phone. When I meet my friend Karen at a restaurant, she will sometimes pull her phone out and get on Facebook or Pinterest. People don’t realize that when they are on their phones and ignoring the group they’re with, that this is rude and hurtful.
