The Hunger Games is a world wide phenomenon that has successfully engaged a large audience due to its thrilling story line. At first glimpse this story is a ‘typical action orientated’ book; although by looking further into the book it shows its true meaning of suffering as entertainment.

The writer of The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins; has managed to use her original story to give the readers an insight to the issue of suffering as entertainment. This theme is not commonly found in many stories but it links to major issues that many countries suffer from. There are twelve districts and two are chosen from each, one female and one male. The forced participants will then battle each other in order to receive one victor. This is all televised as if it is a television show that is entertaining for the capitol, commonly known as a government. When the audience reads the book they will have the ability to relate this fictional story to devastating events that are shown in the media and or on television.

Through this novel the readers can truly receive an insight of Katniss’ struggles during the games. Majority of her struggles were forced upon by the game makers, such as when the tributes were invited to the cornucopia to receive an item they each desperately needed. This obviously caused a large amount of violence in order to please the capitol.

The Hunger Games does an exceptional execution of spreading the awareness of suffering as entertainment. When taking a step out of the world of Panem it is tragically common for individuals to put innocent people through pain for their own satisfaction. For example, when relating to most recent events, there have been multiple shootings in countries all around the world. It is a terrible factor that innocent people are forced into these situations for people deliberately wanting to see others suffer.
