Motivation is defined as an inner drive that encourages action or feeling towards a desired goal. It is moving forward and not staying static. A person’s efforts are energized, directed and sustained towards achieving their goal. It is a basic desire which begins with a physiological or psychological need which triggers a behaviour that is aimed at a goal or incentive. For example hunger motivates the need for food. Desires and goals are the inherent strength that drives us to move, take action or plan to achieve. The processes that give behaviour strength and purpose are needs, cognitions, emotions and external events. Reeve (5th Edition). Motivation is to understand what causes behaviour, what starts the behaviour, why a person does something and why the behaviour stops and what are the forces that determine behaviour’s intensity. There are different types of motivation that influences us from day to day and they have different effects from a short term to long term. As human beings we are inspired in different ways to different motivations. There are two main different types of motivations: Intrinsic motivation and Extrinsic motivation. It is powerful to motivate people using intrinsic motivation as the influence remains longer. Intrinsically motivated people feel satisfaction when the desired goal is achieved. Not everyone has intrinsic motivation for the goals they wish to attain because it depends on their personal interests and choice. Scriberras (Lecture 2013-2014). Extrinsic motivation is easier to use because there is a mixture of rewards, pain and fear and pleasure to motivate others or ourselves. Moreover, extrinsic motivation can be effective by using its moving away or moving toward motivation. For the motivations to be effective it is useful to try the different types of motivation in different circumstances we are in. Changes come from within us so it is motivating to be with positive people to be inspired, motivated and encouraged. Scriberras (Lecture 2013-2014)
