Children’s development is monitored using various methods. These can be summative and formative methods of assessment which can include formal testing/SATs that record a child’s academic level. They can also be formative methods which include observational methods.

The following methods are generally used for monitoring children.

Observational

Observations are most used when a child’s development is causing concern. These can be taken during lesson time and in the playground and record what the child is doing in an informative way.

Information from colleagues and carers

Parents/carers and colleagues generally have invaluable expertise concerning the child being monitored. These are especially invaluable when planning for children with special needs and also, if we are concerned about a child’s development.
