Exploring the Effects of Governmental Policy on the Relationship Between the NHS and Private Sector

‘The potential impact of GP commissioning on the relationship between the NHS and private healthcare providers’ is a particularly current research question in that ‘GP commissioning’ was only incepted in 2010. The literature available on the topic is extremely limited at present and it was hence decided that the research question for the literature review would need to be broader, to address the concept of commissioning under the umbrella of governmental policy. By approaching the review in this manner, a thorough review of the changes that have occurred throughout history would be permitted.
The final research question used for the literature review is as follows:
‘Exploring the effects of governmental policy on the relationship between the NHS and private sector.’

By approaching the literature review more generally, there is the potential for a greater insight into the notion of governmental policy affecting the public-private healthcare relationship. In conducting a literature review, a basic background can be established, key themes/drivers identified, and gaps in the literature identified with respect to GP commissioning. Overall, this literature review will provide necessary contextualisation of project research question – ‘the potential impact of GP commissioning on the relationship between the NHS and private healthcare providers’, within historical changes of this relationship, as affected by recent governmental healthcare policy changes in England. The detailed methodology employed for the literature review including the final search strategy can be found in the appendix .
