NON GOVERNMENTAL ORGANISATIONS

Many roads may be signposted, ‘NGOs’but there is considerable confusion in both literature and among policy makers as to what we mean by NGO all inclusively (Munk1992).There is no one definition or typology of the term NGOs as many of these groups differ in their aims and missions. However there are common features that run through all the definitions and the United Nations in 1959 defined NGOs as, “any international organization which is not established by intergovernmental agreement.” (ECOSOC resolution 288[X], Article 71). In the years that have gone by these organisations have enormously become influential actors on the world stage, thus they are playing major roles in the society enabling to achieve more than the national government and global governance institutions. In this essay the achievements of the NGOs that the governments have failed to attend to and achieve will be discussed at great length.

NGOs have become very influential in the major concerns that are faced by people. Thomas. W. Ditcher (1999) concurs with this notion as he states that NGOs have the lead with prominent voices when it comes to the environmental movement, the importance of women, and the carryover of the notion of sustainability from the physical to the financial and social organizational realm. Therefore making the NGOs more significant in the lives of the people they assist, as they address the major concerns of the people unlike the governments. In a nutshell these organisations have proved to be more in touch with the civilians they assist than the governments do.

One prominent NGO states that its mission is to the poor people to eradicate poverty by overcoming the injustice and inequity that cause it....

...pitals and they even have some volunteers working in hospitals where there is a shortage of staff members so as to assist the people in the country. Frank R. G & Salkever D.S (1994) concur with this notion as they state that NGOs have a substantial share of the U.S. health markets, they care for seventy percent of all inpatient cases in acute care hospitals. Furthermore in the U.S. the non-governmental organizations are responsible for half of the health market for inpatient specialty mental health treatment and substance abuse treatment. In a nutshell one may say that the NGOs have excelled in the health sector as many of the people who cannot afford to go to hospitals for treatment are now dependent on them for their reliable services.

Non governmental organisations have also managed to develop third world countries in terms of infrastructure.
