Exploring Aspects of Parables
This coursework will look at some of the parables from Luke's gospel
and how Jesus used this method of teaching. I will consider why he
used parables and how they are different from other stories.
I will look at Jesus teaching through some parables which will include
The Good Samaritan, The Lost Son and The Rich Man and Lazarus. I will
examine what message he was putting across to the people and how he
did this through using parables.
Then I will discuss what effect and significance they have on the
belief and life of Christians now. In doing this I will look at how
these teachings can influence people's lives and work and how they can
help us learn how to deal with one another.
Then I will discuss whether these teachings are relevant today.
Part A (i)
What is a parable?
A "parable" is a simple story with a single meaning to it compared to
other stories which may be difficult to understand and may have many
meanings.. The word parable came from the Greek word "parabole" which
means a comparison or an analogy of things. The dictionary definition
of the word parable is "narrative of imagined events used to typify
moral or spiritual relations".1 It is also referred to as "a short
fictitious narrative of something which might really occur in life or
nature, by means of which a moral is drawn; as, the parables of
Christ. - Chaucer."2

In conclusion no one today would argue against the benefits from
teaching such things as children's fables nor would they argue that
the use of illustrations in the modern work place is out of date, so
why discard parables because they are from the scriptures. Therefore
the parables of the bible are as relevant today as they were 2000
years ago because it is the essence of the message which is important
not the minute detail which obviously has more relevance to ancient
people.

Metaphors, a rhetorical device in the English literature are frequently used in advertising as a way to enhance the perceived value of a product and often times help to create a particular brand image. For example “Axe’s campaign focuses on the main idea of a man aggressively pursued by a multitude of young, attractive women.” This theme has been coined as “The Axe effect” and has become the main slogan for all the products. The impression that this slogan implies is that once the man applies the product, he is appeal of any attractive women he passes. Therefore mirroring the fourth law stated by Richardson, “in practice women are defined in terms of their sexual desirability to men; and men are defined in terms of their sexual prowess over
The Parable is a story about Rosemary, a young woman who is betrothed to a man named Hernando. Rosemary is supposed to meet Hernando for there up coming wedding but she is faced with a dilemma. In order for her to get to her wedding she has to cross a very deep and wide river that is full of crocodiles. Rosemary is clueless on how she is to get across this river, so she decides to turn to people, she knows, for help. The first person she turns to is Sven for he owns a boat. Sven listens to Rosemary's problem and tells her he will take her across the river if she spends the night with him. Rosemary, surprised and shocked at hearing such an offer, declines and turns to another acquaintance, Lee Pai, for help. Lee Pai tells Rosemary he is sorry but he can't help her. Not knowing what else she can do, Rosemary goes back to Sven for help. She spends the night with him and the next day he takes her across the river. Rosemary and Hernando are then together at last. The evening before their wedding, Rosemary feels the need to tell
This paper is written to discuss the many different ideas that have been discussed over the first half of Theology 104. This class went over many topics which gave me a much better understanding of Christianity, Jesus, and the Bible. I will be addressing two topics of which I feel are very important to Christianity. First, I will be focusing on the question did Jesus claim to be God? This is one of the biggest challenges of the Bibles that come up quite often. Secondly, I will focus on character development.
Romance narrative is a type of writing that usually features a hero and his journey or quest. The hero reaches a transcendent goal through tests or trials. The narrative is often represented as a circle because the story begins with the hero’s goal. It then continues with the hero’s journey through the difficulties that he must overcome to achieve that goal and finishes with the initial goal accomplished. It’s a popular format because it externalizes the internal struggles that people face in their own lives in overcoming problems and especially in defining themselves as they transform from childhood to adulthood. The narrative follows a pattern of initial innocence, acceptance of duties and trials, then failure and despair. The failure is
How would you deal with being stuck on a island as a kid and have to fight for survival each and everyday? In the book lord of the flies a group of british boys get into a plane crash and have to learn a new way of life. The book shows how they adapt to their surrounding and deal with complications thought there days of survival. The boys struggle and change in many different ways some good and some bad. Lord of the Flies portrays the idea that losing morals can develop into a savage lifestyle with the use of literary devices, such as similes, imagery, and foreshadowing.
A parable is any image or story taken from everyday life to instruct with hidden meaning. The word for parable came originally from the Hebrew word “Mashal.” When it was translated into Greek, it was written παραβολή (pronounced parabolē). This Greek word meant to “throw beside,” showing that parables throw a story alongside the truth, just using fake figures.
You’re sitting in a open field, the gentle breeze is blowing swiftly, the yellow sun beams are embracing the earth, the flowers are blooming in all varying hues of the beautiful rainbow; the eternal feeling of bliss is overwhelming and it feels like time has stopped. Who wouldn’t want to be here? But what if that breeze was suddenly replaced by strong, loud winds, clouds started to cover the once-sunny sky, the flowers around you started to shrivel and die: everything changed. A sense of vulnerability would wash over, leaving you feeling isolated, or even dreadful. You would want to leave, wouldn’t you? This is how I felt in the beginning of my eighth grade year, but ultimately, I found my way back to that open field.
It was a chilly night as I was walking down the path to my house to see my wife and children when I heard someone talking. I was very curious about who would be down this path at this time for it was very late into the evening and I had just gotten off work at the office. I walked very quietly towards the voices that I heard. As I crept up behind a bush I could hear a voice saying...
The Bible as a whole is all about Jesus. For those who believe in Him, he is the pivotal character in all of scripture. While the Bible contains much about Jesus, John 17-21 highlights the climax of all scripture, which is his death, burial, resurrection and an opportunity for people to know the truth (John 18:37, NIV). This is why it is important to study this particular passage. For my essay I will give an indication of the settings, and indication of the main conflicts driving the plot and the extent to which those conflicts are resolved, observations on how Jesus is portrayed and the role of the other characters in providing a context for Jesus’ interactions with others, a statement on how this passage
The Gospel according to Matthew, although being the first book of the New Testament canon, it was not considered the first gospel genre to be written. Matthew’s gospel gives an account of the life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. In this essay, I intend to look at how the exegesis and interpretation of this gospel may be affected by our understanding of the authorship, its intended readership and where and when it was written. Although all these categories are important in their own right, I will focus more of the intended audience and readership of this gospel.
The Parables are a section of the Matthews Evangelium in the Christian Bible. It is a common inspiration and focus for interpretation or themes during sermon.
Having little biblical background of the Christian lord, Jesus Christ, and yet having endured myriad quotations and descriptions of Jesus throughout my growing-up years in the heart of the bible belt (Memphis, Tennessee), I hope to verify the bible’s accounts of Jesus. I want to discern for myself whether the accounts of Jesus should be taken literally or figuratively. In reading the accounts of Jesus, I expect to see either contradictory or similar portrayals of Jesus. I expect to gain insight to the Christians perspective of Jesus as their savior; and will try to understand how certain words could and have been taken out of context to support particular Christian claims. Overall, I want to know the accounts of Jesus for myself so that I will have the capability to discuss his death and regarded importance with people of Christian faiths. I want the cognizance of Jesus to support my own beliefs regarding him and the Christian religion; so that I no longer have to compliantly agree with conservative Christians in religious conversations due to my unfamiliarity with the Jesus depicted in the bible.
What are parables of Jesus Christ? The word parable in general may mean the placing of two or more artifacts together to make a comparison or explain an ideology. This same concept could be related to the parables of Jesus Christ the son of God. Some people may choose to define these in various meanings depending on their own understanding. However, in my opinion, a parable is basically an analogy consisting of human circumstances that is accompanied with a spiritual or biblical lesson. Altogether, there are thirty-two parables; which could be found in the books of Mathew, Mark and Luke. Out of all these parables, eighteen of them are found in Luke and ten in Mathew. The eighteen parables found in Luke include, the Lost Coin, the Lost Son, the Unrighteous Steward, the Rich Man and Lazarus, the Unprofitable Servants, the Unrighteous Judge, the Pharisee and Publican, the Pounds, the Two Debtors, the Good Samaritan, the Friend at Midnight, the Rich Fool, the Watchful Servants, the Barren Fig Tree, the Chief Seats, the Great Supper, the Rash Builder, and the Rash King. The ten in Mathew include, the Laborers in the Vineyard, the Two Sons, the Marriage of the King's Son, the Ten Virgins, the Talents, the Tares, the Hidden Treasure, the Pearl of Great Price, the Draw Net, and the Unmerciful Servant. Again, the parables of Jesus Christ could be compared to a class of students with a teacher in the front. Basically Jesus Christ was the teacher and the whole world would be considered as the students. Out of all the parables of Jesus Christ, the main ones I will be talking about will be the parable of the good samaritan, and the parable of the sower.
Systematically, the disabled citizens were excluded from religious affairs and functions by Jewish leaders and other religious leaders. Lepers were often required to separate themselves completely from the community at large . This is why so many parables and teachings of Christ focused on the sick and the poor; they were outcast by religion and the rich. Some believe that there are many parables that are like so many folktales and fables. Many fables, especially Greco-Roman Jewish fables are closely parallel with the gospel parables and that perhaps when Jesus spoke the parable he was pulling from the original Egyptian Fable about a rich man and a poor man . Fables typically have a moral to learn and usually end in irony. Mary Beavis states the ...
It is about a son who abandons his family to “squander his wealth in wild living” (New International Version, Luke.15.13). After losing all his wealth he recognizes the importance of family and returns home. His father lovingly welcomes him because he will always love his son, regardless of the incident. God loves all His children; even the ones that abandon Him. All He asks of us is to repent from our sins and seek Him with all our hearts. This parable motivates believers to always repent because God is the most merciful and forgiving. Besides teaching about the good news, Jesus also performed miracles that caused many people to believe in his
