The purpose of this paper is to explore and explain the historical milestones in special education from the perspective of a special education teacher from the 1960’s through the present day. Before the 1960’s, students with disabilities were largely ignored by the U. S. education system. It was not until several high profile Supreme Court rulings based on lawsuits filed by parents fighting for the rights of their children that services and protections started to be put in place for students with special needs. With the passage of legislation for The Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EAHCA) in 1975, later renamed the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and after several revisions of the law, students with disabilities
