Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka explores the troubles of a young man named Gregor. The Wasp Factory explores the troubles of a young "man" named Frank.

In Metamorphosis, the protagonist in the story is Gregor Samsa. He is a travelling salesman who awakes one morning to discover he has turned into an insect. It seems that Gregor's only use purpose in life is to work and support his family; this seems his own concern when he finds himself as an insect. "The next train went at seven o'clock; to catch that he would need to hurry like mad and his samples weren't even packed up, and he himself wasn't feeling particularly fresh and active" Gregor is alienated from by the ones who love him, much like the alienation of Frank in The Wasp Factory. Eventually, Gregor's close family reject him and let him down. As can be said because what Franks father did to him in The Wasp Factory. The antagonists in Metamorphosis are the people who rejected Gregor and forced him into isolation. Upon seeing Gregor as a bug, his boss runs away and his father locks him in his room. As time goes on Gregor's father feels less and less for his "son", he even becomes aggressive by throwing apples and wounding Gregor.

However, his "devoted" sister Grete still stays true to him, feeding him and moving furniture for him. Saying that, eventually Grete transforms into a selfish and resentful young woman who states she hates the bug. After being rejected by all humanity, Gregor retires to his room and dies.

...ank kills people and animals, however, reading about Frank's three murders and the horrendous treatment of animals didn't really shock me. This is because Frank is telling the tale from his side of the story. His side is "matter-of-fact." Frank believed he had to commit those murders, and as he is telling the story, it makes the reader accept his decisions and reasons for committing thoughtless murders, just because Frank believed they couldn't stay in the world.

There a many comparisons between the two novels, many ideas are brought up, including religion, alienation, animal imagery and many others. However, there are some contrasts, especially in the change of each character. The more sensational story of Gregor Samsa being transformed into a bug and Frank Cauldhame's struggle through life, only to find out he is a female, a race he detests.
