Explain Why Fair Is Not Equal

When it comes to teaching, it is a given that teachers always have that one student in their classroom that pushes their buttons or test their patience a little more than others. For most teachers, it is only that one student while other teachers have multiples. These students may require more patience, prompting, and structure to meet their goals. Most importantly these students may need additional supports beyond the already given ones. Supports are given to students to make their learning experience easier and more engaging. All students are given supports in their own ways, it’s just sometimes others need more. This is why I believe that what is fair is not always equal is true. I think that there is no true definition for the term “fair” or equal”. The definition for these terms depends on the students in that situation. It is important for educators to realize and teach other students that what is fair for one student is not the same or equal to what is fair for another.

The goal of the role play would be to teach students the meaning of fair vs equal. The first example I would give for the students to all student and raise their hand if they are students and if they receive pencil and paper when they get to school. All students would raise hand and I would explain to the students that this means everyone is getting equal things. I would then pick a student who has glasses and take them from the student and ask the class “is it ok that _____ has glasses and you guys don’t?” and they would say “yes!”.
