Explain How to Write a Résumé

The general definition of a résumé is “a brief written account of personal, educational, and professional qualifications and experience, as that prepared by an applicant for a job.” The French origin of the word “résumer” which means “sum up.” (Dictionary.com, 2014). Thus a résumé should essentially be a document that summarizes one’s education, employment history, and experiences that are relevant to his/her qualifications for a particular job for which is being applied for. (Purdue University, 2014). With the definition and the guidance in consideration, a résumé needs to cover the key elements: Qualifications, Experience and Education in a coherent and fluid way. This document will provide the process of writing a résumé by describing the core areas of format/design, section content and special considerations (functional/technical). First and foremost, the résumé needs to have a coherent format and appealing design. The design and the format is extremely important as “Employers will usually take, at most, only thirty-five seconds to look at this one-page representation of yourself before deciding whether to keep or discard it. To ensure that you will make it past that initial screening, you should design your résumé in such a way that employers can read the document easily and process information quickly.” (Purdue University, 2013). The most effective résumé format consists of 4 key sections: Contact Information; Objective and Summary of Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA); Chronological Work Experiences; and Education/Training.
