Disability can affect development in a variety of ways. It is important that every pupil feels valued and included. Diversity should be welcomed. Children should not be stereotyped because of a disability. A physical disability may affect a childâ€TMs social skills if they become withdrawn, their behaviour may also be affected if they feel frustrated by their limitations. Cerebral palsy for example, is a condition that affects the movement, posture and co-ordination of a person, a sufferer can also be affected by seizures, epilepsy or problems with speech and language. Development may be restricted by the expectations of others; an individual should not be labelled in terms of their disabilities rather than their potential. It is important not to assume that a disabled person will not be able to achieve and they should be allowed the opportunity to take part as far as possible. Language is integral to learning as it is linked to our thoughts. It helps us to organise our thoughts in an organised way. If a child has difficulties in communicating with others due to a speech and language delay or disorder, they will not be working to their full potential, as they will be less able to organise their thought processes and express themselves. This becomes even more of a problem as children become older and the curriculum becomes more demanding, the use of rational and abstract thinking will become more important, hence the importance of early detection and intervention. Speech, language and communication development is important for children’s holistic development. Through the development of speech and language, children will learn to socialise and express their preferences and their needs, and be able to make sense of the world. Communicate will support the development of their confidence and self-esteem. Speech is the sound that comes out of our mouth and language is a measure of intelligence. When a person has a problem with either it is called a language disorder. These disorders can be caused by a range of things. Hearing could be an issue if the child has delayed speech or language. Intellectual disability is a common cause of language disorders. Abuse or neglect and not hearing others speak will lead to that child not speaking. Prematurity can cause a number of speech and language delays. Auditory processing disorder is when children have trouble decoding sounds. Cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and traumatic brain injury can affect the muscles needed for speaking. Autism directly affects communication. These are some of the causes of language and speech problems. These problems can be cured. There are ways to monitor children and ensure that they are on track with their language level. From birth to the age of five kids should go through various stages in learning how to talk. At the age of twelve months toddlers should be saying one to two words and recognizing sounds. Usually the first signs of a language deficiency aren’t found until the ages of three to eight. Ability and disability entails the ability to do things others can do or the inability to do something due to physical challenges, mental or emotional challenges that one possesses within their immediate surroundings. Basing on positionality, ability and disability is a key attribute that can make a person to be viewed different within their immediate societies. These attributes can make one to be embraced or sideline within their immediate surroundings.
The social model defines disability as a social construct that creates unwanted barriers for individuals, and a public concern, (Smart & Smart, 2006). Examples of these barriers include “inaccessible education systems, working environments, inadequate disability benefits, discriminatory health and social support services, inaccessible transport, houses and public buildings and amenities, and the devaluing of disabled people through negative images in the media, (Thomas, 2007, p. 13). Swain, et al (1993), states that “disability is not a condition of the individual. The experiences of disabled people are of social restrictions in the world around them, not being a person with a ‘disabling condition,’” (as cited by Lutz & Bowers, 2003).
Some children have problems with language development. A lack of language development can cause a child to be a slow learner. It is of much importance to see if a child has grown in the art of language and reading achievement, if not teachers need to work with these students to bring up their language levels so that they can reach maximum achievement in their class.
The most interesting topic discussed in chapter seven is the sections concerning the medical and social models of disability. I find the difference of the focus of the two models very interesting because one leads to a very different perspective of disability than the other. I find myself aligning more with the thought that both models have to exist in order for the full understanding of disability to come into view. In other words, I do not completely agree nor disagree with either model. To explain, as the medical model is based off of the ideology of normality, which suggests that being in a normal state of good health is the standard for which to base off any deviance or sickness, a definition of normal is required. Some children aren’t raised in a rich language environment due to many factors. Sometimes children aren’t exposed to much language and this delays their language developments. I know this from experience. My nephew who is now three years old has trouble talking and expressing what he wants and what is wrong with him due to the fact that he wasn’t exposed to much language. His mom suffered from severe depression and due to this he wasn’t spoken to or interacted with very much. According Tonya R. Bergeson, children whose caregivers suffer from depression have a more difficult time learning speech because they are spoken to in monotones of flat affects and this is likely to have effects on that child’s language development (Tanya R. Bergeson, Spoken Language Development in infants who are deaf or hard of hearing: The Role of Maternal Infant- Directed Speech, pg. 172). My nephew has a vocabulary of as little as thirty words when he should have a vocabulary of more than two hundred words. He is currently enrolled in language development classes to help him better develop his language skills and vocabulary. If a child isn’t in an environment where they’re not being interacted with and where a strong language system isn’t in place it will cause a delay in their language development.
The World Health Organisation, WHO, (1980) defines disability in the medical model as a physical or mental impairment that restricts participation in an activity that a ‘normal’ human being would partake, due to a lack of ability to perform the task . Michigan Disability Rights Coalition (n.d.) states that the medical model emphasizes that there is a problem regarding the abilities of the individual. They argue that the condition of the disabled persons is solely ‘medical’ and as a result the focus is to cure and provide treatment to disabled people (Michigan Disability Rights Coalition, 2014). In the medical model, issues of disability are dealt with according to defined government structures and policies and are seen as a separate issue from ordinary communal concerns (Emmet, 2005: 69). There is numerous definitions worldwide and in Canada for the term “disability”, and debates about who is considered a person with a disability. Winkler gives an elaborate definition of this term which will be used to define disability throughout this paper.
