Experimentation: Necessary or Unnecessary?

Feeling sorry for the animals is definitely where it starts for people who don't agree with animal testing; but that's not where it ends. Scientists and medical researchers say that animal testing is the future to finding cures. They also believe it is cruel to use animals to test our products on but there are no other options. Using animals for testing helps them figure out what will work and not work on humans. Using animals can help find cures faster and help prevent more human deaths.

Animal Experimentation Jeremy Bentham a philosopher and a utilitarian humanitarian once said, “The question is not, “Can they reason?” nor, “Can they talk?” but “Can they suffer?”(the-principles). Why are there so many animals in the world suffering from animal experimentation? Animal experimentation is used in order to test products and to discover new medical research. While animal experimentation is necessary many people believe it is wrong and inhumane. Animal experimentation may be very important but it is questioned whether or not if it is wrong and if there is any way to find substitutions in place of using animals.

Some scientist feel that they could find healthy alternatives, while others feel that they have the right to use animals in their experiments, and that the animals are inferior to humans; therefore, have no rights ("Controversy of Animal Testing - About Animal Testing (UK)"). Scientist preform a lot of experiments on animals, but more than ninety percent of them are for human benefit (“Adams, Stephen”). Things like cosmetics, vaccinations, and solution to diseases. A major flaw within doing these things is that animals and humans have different genetic structures. By them having different genetic structures it makes it difficult because they could find something that works for an animal but could harm a human and the other way around.

Although animals may seem the like ideal specimens for testing new drugs, the experiments are untrustworthy and can cause unknown side effects. Research on animals is deemed necessary to develop vaccines, treatments, and cures for diseases and to ensure that new products are safe for humans to use. “The development of immunization against such diseases as polio, diphtheria, mumps, measles, rubella, pertussis, and hepatitis all involved research on animals […]” (AMPEF 1). Scientists have found many drugs by means of animal experimentation. To some people, animals are viewed as better test subjects than anything else.

It difficult to scarified innocent animals but those animals help human to continue living. While there are multiple accusations of animal cruelty, few people actually witness the inner workings of a research lab and multiple regulations prevent animal cruelty, but animal research still continues to cause pain (Wolff, 2009). The use of animals in experiment is fundamental for human descendent. Many Humans are absolutely positive that scientific should experiment with animals to save humans life. Because there are so many similarities between human and animal physiology, experimentation has allowed scientists to discover new treatments for diseases and guarantee the safety of new drugs (Foundation for Biomedical Research, 2009).

The ethical treatment and testing on animals is a widely controversial subject in the field of zoology. Views on animal testing range from positivity to full negativity. Animals such as mice and rats have been found to have psychological and genetic similarities that relate to humans which make them perfect for the experimental trials. Before various products are put out for humans consumption, animals are the most common way for companies to see if their new inventions work. The benefits and improvements to modern medicine as a result of animal testing should be weighed heavily against the harmful and toxic ingredients used in such experiments and their detrimental effects on test subjects like rats and mice.

(“Do Something”) Despite many animal testing protesters, the benefits of animal testing in the field of medicine for humans outweigh any animal suffering that may occur. “Without animals, we may not have benefited from advances that have given us the antibiotics, vaccines and anaesthetics that we now take for granted. Blood transfusions might never have been developed. It is difficult to see how we could control diabetes, asthma and high blood pressure, which would cause more suffering and claim more lives. At the other extreme there are those who say that it is quite all right for us to do whatever we like to animals.

Experimenting on humans is inhumane and completely immoral, while animals that do not function in the same way humans do should be used in medical research and to test the safety of various products. If animal testing were illegal, how would worldly corporations determine the safety of products? Surely the valuable lives of human beings are not essential to risk, hence the reason that animal experimenting is necessary. In addition, medical research would be in great jeopardy if were animals were not permitted to be experimented on. Medical industries have already come so far in treating multiple ailments due to the tests performed on animals.

Scientists use animals instead of humans because experimenting against humans is viewed as impractical and unethical. The debate of animals being used in commercial products and educational exercises is an emotionally stimulated issue going on in modern society. Many animal rights groups, including PETA, have found that the way that animals are being treated during testing is morally wrong. Emotion may be the determining factor in deciding whether a person believes that animal testing is ethical or unethical. The use of animal testing has been beneficial, discovering many different medications that have saved human lives.
