The American society has had many expansions, one being known as the Westward expansion. The United States changed immensely in the early 19th Century. The United States started small; however, within time it grew. Some people started immigrating to the United States, although the journey was known to be difficult. The people saw an opportunity being promoted in the United States which brought their attention. America also had the allusion of the Manifest Destiny which referred to the natural expansion westward. The United States had many goals and different perspectives on expanding their land. Manifest destiny was what it was known as. John L. O'Sullivan was very passionate and believed in Manifest destiny. In a documentation his very last sentence concluded, “Who, then, can doubt that our country is destined to be the great nation of futurity?” He admired and knew that his perspective on this destiny was going to happen and America needed it. America believed that they were portrayed as stronger and bigger in the world. In Americas perspective, the Manifest Destiny was something natural that was going to happen. The painting by John Gast represents the overview of the Manifest Destiny. An angelic woman in white seems to be leading the way to the people traveling West. Looking upon the image, the angelic woman is bringing light to the darkness. She also has cables in her arms and a book which shows how she is bringing in new things into the West. The settlers are being guided by the angelic woman, they are in their wagons, horses, or walking by foot. The image overall sent a message of the American progress to the West.
