An impatient crowd irrupted in erratic chants. Suddenly, causing the chants to cease, ‘The Exotic Goddess’, Mandy Leon’s theme song blasts throughout the arena. A wave of cheers and boos crash over Mandy as she eaters the arena. The Exotic Goddess begins to walk down the ramp, completely ignoring desperate fans reaching out to her. As she climbs up the steel step stationed at the side of the ring, she is handed a microphone by a ring side assistant. Your title run was very, very inspirational. But, at the end of the day, that is just another reason you shouldn’t be in this match. You’re old news, Becky. Been there, done that. The exact idea on the American identity differs from each person. In Okita's poem, "Response to Order 9066," and in Cisneros's short story, "Mericans," they both touch on their own ideas on what makes an American. The poem tells of a young Japanese girl's experience as an American before and after Order 9066. It describes how the girl and her friend's relationship broke due to the negative views on Japanese-Americans soon after the order. In the short story, a young Mexican girl doe not enjoy or embrace her own culture and would rather do activities other Americans do for fun. Later in the the story, the girl and her siblings surprise an American photographer that they could speak English soon declaring that they are "Merican." Both Okita's poem and Cisneros's short story show that cultural heritage and physical appearances do not determine what it means to be an American.

She also uses Mme. de Clèves to show her way of expressing toward the situation that the Princess has. Literature shows us the changes of our society from time to time. It also gives us an idea about people, culture, politics, gender traditions, as well as an overall view of previous civilizations. As a part of literature, poetry introduces us to different cultures with different perspectives. Ancient Egypt and ancient China may differ in terms of culture, politics, economic stability, tradition, or even in religious belief. However, in poetry, especially in love lyrics both Egyptian and Chinese poems portray common area of describing women, social attitudes toward love, sexuality and the existence of romance or selfishness in relationships. . If we look at the Egyptian poem “My god, my Lotus” and the Chinese poem “Fishhawk”, we will see both poems have similarities in describing relationships. Also, they have the similarity of imagining the lovers and their expression of love toward each other. However, both poems have some significant differences in terms of representing female sexuality, gender disparity and the display of love.

He had led me to something that I will now look forward to going to for the rest of my life. Even with the blistering sun and even with the pouring rain, I found a sense of my own belongingness. Just because I didn't look the part of a usual rodeo fan, didn't mean that I wasn't one of the biggest fans of all. I was glad that I could be a supporter for my friend, but most of all I was glad for the new, thrilling experience. It was a feeling that no roller coaster ride could ever give me.
The poems “Sea Rose” by H.D and “Vague Poem” by Elizabeth Bishop were both written by two women who took over the Victorian era. H.D’s works of writing were best known as experimental reflecting the themes of feminism and modernism from 1911-1961. While Bishop’s works possessed themes of longing to belong and grief. Both poems use imagery, which helps to make the poem more concrete for the reader. Using imagery helps to paint a picture with specific images, so we can understand it better and analyze it more. The poems “Sea Rose” and “Vague Poem” both use the metaphor of a rose to represent something that can harm you, even though it has beauty.
A tragic event took place in the life of Maya Angelou. She was a small child, only 7 years old. That would mean that she was only the age of a average 1st grader. She was sexually assaulted and raped by her mother’s boyfriend at the time. Maya was not allowed to see her mother very often and it is horrible that this had to happen at one of the only times she should have been so happy and enjoying herself. Maya lived very far away from her mother and usually was at her grandmother’s. These visits were few and far between to say the least. Shortly after this, Maya’s uncle killed the man who raped her in order to get revenge on him for what he had done. His actions, although meant to be good and for the better, messed things up even more. This did not help and added to the stress of the entire situation. It was too much for Maya to handle all at one time and at such a young age. She stopped talking for a very long time. It was very hard for her to cope with what had happened. Maya’s poetry conveys the sadness and the struggle that she went through in this time of her life. Maya Angelou's poetry contains bold messages and gives a voice to individuals who, at times, do not have the courage or ability to speak for themselves. Just as she did not have the ability to speak for all those years, she is an example to others in situations that are similar to her own. Three poems that the subject of empowerment is very profound in are “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings”, “Still I Rise”, and “Phenomenal Woman.”
Selena, “Le Reina de Tejano”, was born on April 16, 1971, in Lake Jackson. She was the youngest of three children of Abraham Quintanilla Jr. and Marcela, his wife. At a young age, Abraham had a strong passion for music that he still has. During the 1950s and 1960s, him and his friends made a group called “Los Dinos” and played at nightclubs and restaurants. Even though his passion for music, he gave it up when he got married and earned a job at Dow Chemical as a shipping clerk.

The first poem that I chose was by the poet Julia Alvarez titled “Queens, 1963” this told the story of a family that has moved into in Queens, NY. The writer and narrator of this story is from the Dominican Republic. One year has passed for the family to finally settle into the neighborhood. This time an African American family has moved right across the street. The young girl notices how her neighbors have not treated this family with kindness and respect. More police have been seen patrolling through the neighborhood. When reading this poem my initial thoughts were that “Queens, 1963” describes the American people's behavior towards foreigners and their reactions. Alvarez states, “Mr. Scott, the retired plumber, and his plump Midwestern wife, considered moving back home, where white and black got along by staying where they belonged.” (Alvarez, pp 952) It will take another year and another family that will move into their neighborhood, than once the African American family settles in another family will be placed under the same scrutiny.

Naomi Shihab Nye was born in St louis Missouri in 1952, to a palestinian refugee and a swiss german american, she spent most of her life in san antonio texas and jerusalem. The vast differences in cultures and peoples influenced her works. Naomi earned a BA from trinity university in san antonio, and now continues to work and live in san antonio. She takes influence from the common people like her neighbors, “ she never tires of mixtures!!” her poetry borrows from middle eastern, native american and and eastern religions, her poetry is said to be similar to william stafford and wallace stephens. it is said that with her acceptance of differences in prayer, show that she has realized that livig in the world can be difficult. The purpose of this essay is to analyze and compare and contrast the two paired poems “My Last Duchess” by Robert Browning and “My Ex-Husband” by Gabriel Spera to find the similarities presented within the pairs. Despite the monumental time difference between “My Last Duchess” and “My Ex-Husband”, throughout both poems you will see that somebody is wronged by someone they thought was a respectable person and this all comes about by viewing a painting on the wall or picture on a shelf.
CLAP, CLAP, CLAP, CLAP, echoes through my head as I walk to the middle of the mat. "At 160lbs Aidan Conner of La Junta vs. Rodney Jones of Hotchkiss." All I can think of is every bead of sweat, every drip of blood, every mile, every push up, every tear. Why? All of this: just to be victorious. All in preparation for one match, six minutes. For some these six minutes may only be a glimpse, and then again for some it may be the biggest six minutes of their life. Many get the chance to experience it more than once. Some may work harder and want it more than others, but they may never get the chance. All they get is a moral victory. Every kid, every man comes into the tournament with a goal. For some is to win, for some is to place, others are just happy to qualify. These six minutes come on a cold frigid night in February at a place called the Pepsi Center. Once a year this gathering takes place when the small and the large, the best of the best, come to compete in front thousands of people. I am at the Colorado State Wrestling Championships.
