Has anyone ever assumed anything of you? How about your occupation? What you’d like to be when you grow up? Being a different race in America comes with a big cluster of problems. Some examples are things you’ll see in the news. Maybe even things you hear about in public, whether they’re rumors or facts. Sometimes the news is good or sometimes bad. But sometimes, people have a way of matching two different events and scapegoating everyone of a certain race for it. But you probably know what I’m talking about. It may even have happened to you. I’ve been subjected to this too, to a minor issue called racism. I’d like to share a few personal things about me and a story of when I was young, when I first learned and experienced what a problem racism could be.
A little something to know is that I’m something called an A.B.C., otherwise known as an American Born Chinese. Both of my parents are from China, but they moved to America to look for new job opportunities. I was born in Akron, Ohio and I now go to Green Local Schools. My parents moved to America when my uncle was the owner of his restaurant called China House. After a few years my uncle decided he wanted to sell his restaurant, and my dad agreed to buy it. One interesting one is that you can talk in public with your family without others knowing what you’re talking about. Second of all, if you have family in China, when you visit, you don’t need to pay for hotels, because we have people to live with when we’re visiting. Lastly, you get more exposure to different kinds of food. Some examples of different foods I’ve had over the years are frog legs, pig feet, and durian. Durian also smells as horrible as a public restroom, but once you eat it, it doesn’t taste bad, but rather a nice fragrant taste.
