Throughout the Crucible, fear many times led to persecution. Mary Warren the new servant for the Proctors is beyond fearful of the towns one and only Abigail Williams. Abigail warns Mary that if she confesses what really happened in the woods that night besides dancing, Abigail will visit her at night and make Mary regret ever seeing the sun go down. Mary Warren wants to badly confess about what really happened when she and the other girls are caught in the woods dancing and making "a spell" to get the boys in their town to like them, with Mary ready to confess she says to Abigail "Abby we've got to tell…We must tell the truth Abby! Rebecca Nurse was one of the many victims during this time, while being a midwife for Thomas Putnam wife Ann Putnam Rebecca was accused of witchcraft because Ann believed that Goody Nurse was the cause for the death of her 7 out of 8 children therefore caused Ann Putnam to get her vengeance and blame Rebecca Nurse for witchcraft and caused goody Nurse her to hang. Another victim was Elizabeth Proctor by the one and only Abigail Williams. While a servant for the Proctors, John Proctor and Abigail Williams were committing adultery, after Abigail getting caught and fired and she wanting to continue the affair with John but they weren't on the same page. After learning that John didn't want to continue the affair Abigail tries to get revenge and stabs herself and blames it on Elizabeth with witchcraft, John realizes what Abigail is trying to do and confesses, "She thinks to dance on my wife's grave! And well she night for I thought of her softly, God help me, I lusted."…(Miller 193). This quote is important because this is when things started to turn and Proctor confess to having a affair and now everyone knows the truth about Abigail and what she has really done and her real reasoning of stabbing herself.
