Deemed to be the oldest surviving long poem in Old English, Beowulf, has remained a timeless classic. This epic poem was written in England in the early centuries of civilization- approximately between the 8th or 10th century (Abrams pg. 36). Although the author has remained a mystery, several propositions have been made as to who may have been the passionate poet of such a work. Nonetheless, the poem exceeds expectations. The action-packed thriller entertains the readers while also offering historical insight. For instance, the poem repeatedly mentions God Almighty and enforces Christian ideals; however, the pagan values fabricated within the storyline are difficult to overlook. However, it is interesting to note that prior to this engagement, Beowulf expressed evidently characteristic pagan behavior. At first, Beowulf had only undertaken the task of defeating the monster in order to gain fame for himself. Paganism during that century idolized recognition and reputation; therefore, it is quite understandable to have Beowulf seek a reputation for himself by boasting of his past accomplishments and about future adventures. Because battles are portrayed as signs of great courage and valor in Medieval times, warrior shamelessly brag about their triumphant brawls which is exactly as Beowulf does. The reader can acknowledge Beowulf’s desire for fame as he prides himself in his strength and endangers himself through his brash propositions. For instance, in the story Beowulf states, "I have heard moreover that the monster scorns in his reckless way to use weapons; therefore, to heighten Hygelac 's fame and gladden his heart, I hereby renounce sword and the shelter of the broad shield... hand-to-hand is how it will be, a life-and-death fight with the fiend" (Beowulf 433-444). No one in their right mind would subject themselves to such vulnerability as Beowulf had at this moment, yet it is the pagan nature of these individuals that cause them
