Payton Pavlicek Ms. North-P.4 Romeo and Juliet Essay 24 February 2017 Obedience is Key “Obedience is an act of faith; disobedience is the result of unbelief” –Edwin Louis Cole. In the tragic play Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare, Juliet was very disobedient and went behind her parents back to get married to a member of their enemy family. An abundance of disobedience can lead to tragic outcomes and disastrous endings. Disobedience is prevalent in teenagers. In the play, Romeo is very disobedient in different ways. For example Romeo goes to the Capulet’s party even though he is not invited. He is convinced by his friends to crash the party because Rosaline would be there: “I’ll go along, no such sight to be shown, but to rejoice …show more content…
For example, Juliet gets married without her parents’ permission, sneaking away to do so. Juliet never gives her parents a chance to say no to the marriage. Her father only wants her happiness, and with time, might even have agreed to the marriage. He even tells Tybalt at the party that “Verona brags of him [Romeo] to be a virtuous and well-grounded youth” (1.5.67-68). This indicates that Lord Capulet might well have eventually welcomed Romeo into their family. Unfortunately with Juliet’s disobedience he never gets the chance. Juliet further disobedience to her parents when she defies them and refuses to marry Paris. “I will not marry yet; and when I do, I swear it shall be Romeo, whom you know I hate, rather than Paris. These are news indeed” (3.5.122-124). She explains that she would rather marry her “enemy” over marring Paris. She is saying no to her parents and expressing resistance to their sayings. Soon after that, Juliet agrees to marry Paris. She tells her joyful parents that she will be going to Friar Laurence to speak about the wedding. She is now lying to her parents because she is actually going to Friar for the potion. She set up this plan to escape the marriage and go into a death-like sleep. She once again disobeys her parents which may lead to further
A key theme of Romeo and Juliet that occurs throughout the play is Loyalty Vs. Disloyalty and the effects that this has on the characters Romeo and Juliet and their families. For example Romeo knows that if he tells his family of his love for Juliet it will be seen, as a disloyalty to his family and Romeo knows this so he tries to hide this truth.
Although disobedient maybe true from Capulets point of view, it doesn't mean it is a bad thing if it is. he's in the wrong. I think Juliet should be felt sorry for as she has no one to turn to, her mother says. "Talk not to me, for I'll not speak a word" and the nurse just leaves her on her own. As for Lord Capulet he is just being selfish and trying to control Juliet to protect his
One of the most popular theories about irrational behavior is that people’s actual interests will differ from what they believe is really their interest. In other words, what you think you want is not really what you want, it is not what your real interests are. The story of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is about two people from two rival families who fall deeply in love. The two lovers believe that they have been in love since the moment that that they landed eyes on each other. However, this did cause some terrible things to happen, only because they loved each other. Shakespeare's purpose in writing this play was to show that you should not be irrational just because you believe that you want something new.
Because of miscommunication, Romeo and Juliet’s parents are not informed of their teenager’s conflicts, therefore making them useless. An example of miscommunication between the adults and adolescents is when Romeo locks himself in his room depressed. Lord Montague is deeply concerned about Romeo’s seclusive ways, saying he is “to himself, so secret”. Lord and Lady Montague want to “learn from whence his sorrows grow” so they can help him with his troubles (I.i.155-163). Because Romeo alienates himself from his parents, not telling them he is heartbroken from Rosaline, his parents do not know why he is upset. If he would have had told his parents of his recent heartbreak, the Montague’s could have helped him resolve this issue. However, this does not happen and the parents end up being futile. While it is not the Montague’s fault that Romeo does not ...
First of all, the dishonesty of Friar Lawrence, who married Romeo and Juliet, foreshadows the probability of his continuity to take even more insincere measures in manipulating the consequences faced by the young lovers. The Friar carries out an erroneous act of secretly marrying them under the church’s license without manifesting it in the public and encourages them to deceive their parents by keeping their relationship to themselves. He then agrees to marry Juliet and Paris, a county, and plans on faking her death, in order to avoid the marriage instead of revealing the truth about Romeo and Juliet right away. “I hear thou must, and nothing may prorogue it,/On Thursday next be married to this County.” (4.1.49-50) In short, various incidents in the lives of Romeo and Juliet, controlled by Friar Lawrence’s cowardice result in undesirable circumstances.
Overall In the play “Romeo and Juliet” Juliet is forced to break the rules set forth by society; however, she only does this in order to gain true happiness. The ways that she breaks the rules range from disobeying her parents to having to fake her own death, but she does all of this for one cause. That cause is simply to live a life that she wanted, and to be with the one person that she truly loved.
In the beginning of the play Romeo and Juliet make many rash decisions that change the course of the play. Such as, when Romeo decides to sneak into the Capulet’s garden to have a conversation with Juliet. If Romeo was spotted by any of the guards or a resident of the Capulet household, he would have been captured and killed. When Juliet asks how Romeo snuck into the garden he replies to her, “With love’s light wings did I o’erperch these walls, For stony limits cannot hold love out…” (2.2.66-67). Romeo states that he snuck in with love’s wings and that nothing can stand in the way of love. Romeo shows that his love for Juliet can lead him to make rash decisions and not to think his actions through. An example of Juliet making a rash decision
“Dreams do come true, if only we wish hard enough. You can have anything in life if you’re willing to sacrifice everything else for it.” (J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan). Throughout our lives we will always be surrounded by the sacrifices of people around us and people in history. I like to think that in many ways sacrifices will turn out good in someway, whether it is the moment after or hundreds of years later. From the books we read in class the two largest sacrifices were intended for good and were based off of the love for the people they cared about in their lives. We saw this in Romeo and Juliet when they both went to great lengths to be with each other. Spoiler alert, in the end they both had plans so juristic that they collided and concluded with both dying over each other. Another example of this sacrifice in Cyrano
Juliet was a beautiful girl who was lovestruck and she would give her life away for love. She is obedient, eager and passionate young girl. She was deep in love with Romeo. Romeo and Juliet is a play written by William Shakespeare.
Another example of adolescent disobedience is the children’s animated movie “Gnomeo and Juliet” which is loosely based upon the former. The theme of adolescent rebellion has been popular for a very long time. Like stated before, Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” is based on this rebellion, as well as forbidden love. A specific example of where a juvenile revolts in the tragic play is in Act Three, Scene Five.
The decision of pursuing personal desire or choosing to conform is a conflict that every person in life experiences. In his play, Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare portrayed that the aforementioned conflict was existent in everyone’s life, and, depending upon what they chose, there would be corresponding repercussions. Shakespeare displays this conflict when the protagonist, Romeo, attends the ball, marries Juliet, and kills Tybalt.
Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy of an ancient feud where the children of two families at war fall deeply in love with each other. Set in the 16th century William Shakespeare’s play has many different themes running throughout it, which include love, hate, death and conflict. The play opens with a fight but ends with suicide that creates peace between both families who unite from their losses. The conflict, violence and aggression in the play happen from revenge and an ancient family grudge. An audience from the 16th century would have enjoyed Romeo and Juliet because of the real life drama and tragedy the play goes through. The patriarchal society gave women absolutely no rights and they had to obey their man’s ordering a patriarchal system. The theme of conflict is revealed as the characters argue over Juliet’s disobedience.
In the beginning of the play, Juliet is unable to make her own decisions. However, after her meeting with Romeo, Juliet becomes more assertive and defends her love for Romeo. In conclusion, individuals cannot be forced to love; love is nurtured and nourished but is also always put to
Throughout the play Juliet became very disobedient. Even after she knew that her family and her lover's family were enemies, she decided to marry Romeo. When her parents wanted her to marry Paris, a young wealthy man she responded, " I will not marry yet; and when I do, I swear it shall be Romeo."(3.5.136). This proves that she is disobedient because she talked back to her father, and changed from being calm and respectful to disobedient. Even earlier in the play
In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, it is shown that even though it is important to take your parents ideas and thoughts into consideration, disobeying is sometimes the better choice. SOMETIMES. Not always, which is also showed the play. The ideas that children know what will make them happy has a major factor in it. Also the thought that sometimes when one’s ethic and views on morals are in stake, it may be better to do what you feel is right. The last one was that sometimes children need to be on their own to grow up and learn some valuable life lessons that will benefit them in the bright future they have. So a person can argue either way but there is a point in a child’s life that they will rebel and quite often it doesn’t turn out well, but sometimes it does and that there is always next time. Unless you die first.
