Abstract Nursing is a very diverse career. There are so many focuses and practices that one interested in this field could choose from. Today, nurses are earning more credibility and responsibility in the medical field. When starting to think about a career in nursing, there is a specialty out there for everyone. Not every prospective nurse is interested in the same area. Today, nurses have an option to choose which area they want to work in whether that be a school nurse, trauma nurse, or research nurse. There are two ways a child can come into this world, and that is through vaginal delivery or cesarean section. No matter the method, there are trained professionals there to introduce a newborn into the world. Labor and Delivery nurses are very important to not only the afterbirth of a newborn. They are also responsible for taking care of the mother before. Labor and Delivery nurses act as coaches, informing the mother and other family members on what to expect once the labor begins and what to do afterwards such as breast feeding. To be a Labor and Delivery nurse, one must have care and compassion because doctors and nurses can never be one hundred percent sure of things that may occur during delivery. There are certain instances when there are infants who are very ill or do not make it, and these nurses need to be ready for whatever is thrown at them. To receive a position in labor and delivery, a student must first get their Nursing Diploma, Associates of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN). After gaining that, they must take electives in labor and delivery and of course meet the passing requirements for those. Once that is completed, the nurse must gain experience as an RN in labor and Delivery. After an appropriate time gaining experience, the (RNC-OB) Certification needs to be taken and passed through the National Certification Corporation to be considered and working as a Labor and Delivery Nurse
Perinatal nurses and neonatal nurses both assist the doctor during the birth depending on the risk of the pregnancy and how they think the baby will do will determine what nurse is in the room with you. Both neonatal nurses and perinatal nurses deal with newborn babies. If your baby is high-risk for illness or if your baby is being born prematurely there will be a neonatal nurse with you in the delivery room. If your baby is healthy and being born on time you will have a perinatal nurse with you in the delivery room. In the nursery although they deal with babies with different health they do some things the same when they are taking care of them. Nurses in both the NICU and the well-baby nursery have to take care of babies right after delivery measuring vital signs and giving them vital nutrients. As you may have predicted, all neonatal nurses must start in the same exact place and follow and complete a certain path of education so that they can be successful in pursuing their career. Without a doubt, becoming a neonatal nurse is not easy. There are a lot of different requirements that are necessary that one must obtain before entering this field. First off, there is college. Generally, undergraduate and graduate degree programs are both required to be completed in nursing to become a neonatal nurse (“Career Summary, Job Outlook, and Education Requirements”). This being said, an Associate’s Degree in Nursing (AND) is essential if you want to pursue a career in neonatal nursing.
Neonatal nursing is a field of nursing designed especially for both newborns and infants up to 28 days old. The term neonatal comes from neo, "new", and natal, "pertaining to birth or origin”. Neonatal nurses are a vital part of the neonatal care team. These are trained professionals who concentrate on ensuring that the newborn infants under their care are able to survive whatever potential life threatening event they encounter. They treat infants that are born with a variety of life threatening issues that include instances of prematurity, congenital birth defects, surgery related problems, cardiac malformations, severe burns, or acute infection. Neonatal care in hospitals was always done by the nursing staff but it did not officially become a specialized medical field until well into 1960s. This was due to the numerous advancements in both medical care training and related technology that allowed for the improved treatment and survival rate of premature babies. According to the March of Dimes, one of every thirteen babies born in the United States annually suffers from low birth weight. This is a leading cause in 65% of infant deaths. Therefore, nurses play a very important role in providing round the clock care for these infants, those born with birth defects or other life threatening illness. In addition, these nurses also tend to healthy babies while their mothers recover from the birthing process. Prior to the advent of this specialized nursing field at risk newborn infants were mostly cared for by obstetricians and midwives who had limited resources to help them survive (Meeks 3).
Neonatal Nursing has been around since the 1960s. It is a form of nursing that is referred to as the first twenty-eight days of life. Nursing is an important job for everyone because, when you are sick or hurt a nurse can heal your wound or prescribe medicine if they are authorized to. The demand for nurses is expected to grow so anyone that wants to become a nurse will always be able to find a job. The employment rate for nursing as of 2012-2022 is expected to grow nineteen percent which is higher than average.

After finishing up term one of my nursing career, I can officially say I feel nursing is most definitely the profession I have been searching for. I have had an amazing experiences and practice by going to clinical which helped me improve upon my nursing skills and EOP SLO. It can be seen, being prepared, maintain professionalism and safe practice, having exceptional communication, respecting culture, adapting care across the lifespan, promoting health education, and having an admirable nursing process were all valued and demonstrated by me.
Nursing is a very rewarding career. There are chances to make a difference in life very day. Besides that, job security is a featured benefit of the nursing career. Nurses will always be a necessary part of the healthcare system, and hospitals are unable to function without large workforce like nursing staff. The profession of nursing also allows the nurse to choose his/her own specialty. Nursing has a phenomenal wide range of choices that one can choose. Nurses can choose to work in any of the many nursing fields available, and can also choose to become certified in a specialty of choice. There are opportunities for leadership, and many times nurses find their way into management, sometimes leading as officers in large healthcare companies. A labor and delviery nurse has vast knowledge of the process and methods that are required for delivery and bring a new life into the world and is educated with the responsibilities of assiting the new born babies with their medical issues. Considering all the responsibilites needed to take on this career, such as assisting women with complications within the pregnancy, delivering a newborn and managing post birth issuses, the nurse must be professional in his or her work at all times. All people wishing to pursue the career of being a Labor and Delivery Nurse must also have good analytical skills, as part of there job to montior and analyze the mother and child (CollegeAtlas.org).
Nursing came in a round-about way for me. I had little direction when I graduated high school and had already disregarded the nursing field due to an incident with a family member (who was a nurse) that had left a negative impression about the nursing field on me. I entered college planning on a pre-med or biology major. I had built up a vision of college being different- scholarly, intellectual, advanced- different somehow than school before. I soon was disillusioned. My first biology course was a bitter disappointment and I turned away from any thoughts of a medical/health related career altogether.
Nursing has always been a key career in the health care system. Although it is not often focused on media and stories surrounding health care, nursing is a career of great importance. If any patient was asked about their experience at a hospital or a care center, many would mention the capability and care that they received from the nurses. The health care system could not function efficiently, if at all, if nurses were not present to perform their part. Nurses are more than just physicians, support staff.
There is nothing comparable with the happiness of knowing my purpose in life. Nursing is a career where you can never stop evolving. When a woman comes to the hospital, a nurse will collect all basic information before performing the check up. Getting name, age, chief complaint, and in this case how far along is she in her pregnancy, and of course how many babies there are. The nurse will also be sure to gather information such at the name of the physician she is under, any previous medical diagnoses, number of pregnancies, how many births, expected day of delivery, allergies, time of the last oral intake, and pain level. The woman will go to the admission process and into the delivery room. She will stay admitted until after the delivery, and then moved to a more calming and secluded section with her baby. The mother will have her vital signs as well as a full assessment
I believe that Nursing is a profession that is unique to the individual. My reasons for choosing such a profession is due to the fact that I have a desire to help others. Growing up with a very sick parent of whom I traveled back and forth over the years to many physician offices, lead me to develop my career path at an early age which was nursing.
