Abstract Nursing is a very diverse career. There are so many focuses and practices that one interested in this field could choose from. Today, nurses are earning more credibility and responsibility in the medical field. When starting to think about a career in nursing, there is a specialty out there for everyone. Not every prospective nurse is interested in the same area. Today, nurses have an option to choose which area they want to work in whether that be a school nurse, trauma nurse, or research nurse. There are two ways a child can come into this world, and that is through vaginal delivery or cesarean section. No matter the method, there are trained professionals there to introduce a newborn into the world. Labor and Delivery nurses are very important to not only the afterbirth of a newborn. They are also responsible for taking care of the mother before. Labor and Delivery nurses act as coaches, informing the mother and other family members on what to expect once the labor begins and what to do afterwards such as breast feeding. To be a Labor and Delivery nurse, one must have care and compassion because doctors and nurses can never be one hundred percent sure of things that may occur during delivery. There are certain instances when there are infants who are very ill or do not make it, and these nurses need to be ready for whatever is thrown at them. To receive a position in labor and delivery, a student must first get their Nursing Diploma, Associates of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN). After gaining that, they must take electives in labor and delivery and of course meet the passing requirements for those. Once that is completed, the nurse must gain experience as an RN in labor and Delivery. After an appropriate time gaining experience, the (RNC-OB) Certification needs to be taken and passed through the National Certification Corporation to be considered and working as a Labor and Delivery Nurse
