Minority Relations Experience It is not rare to see that minority students sometimes face prejudice at school. I read the story Increase in English language learners shows gaps in school (Wang, 2015). The article described how Cruz Tapia, a African student who studies in U.S., was suffering prejudice. Cruz Tapia were asked many prejudice questions, like “ Do you have potatoes in Africa?”, or “ Go back to your country”. When minority student come to U.S. they often need more help because they don’t know much about English language and American culture. When minority students heard this kind of questions, they may get insulted. My husband and I attended one of his friends’ wedding. His friend, the bride, a beautiful and friendly white female, invited us. On that day, when we arrived there on time, at the beginning everything looked normal. We enjoyed some appetizers and desserts and talked with old and new friends. We were the only two Asians who attended Amy’s wedding. Most her friends were white. We were curious about the procedure and details of an American’s wedding. When the bride and the bridegroom were taking photos in the front yard of the house we were watching them and witnessing their greatest happiness. My husband and I were standing at the stairs, suddenly the bride’s father, who was busy to greet and talk to different guests, noticed us. We figure out he must be the bride’s father as his behavior looked like to be one of the most important person in the wedding. Once he saw us he interrogated us with deep suspicion: “What are guys doing here?” I said: “We are attending our friend’s wedding.” His suspicion did not end: “Whose wedding you are attend?” Without hesitation, I replied: “Amy’s wedding”. Amy’s father appeared to be astonished and embarrassed. He ended our conversation after our reply. This event made us feel very uncomfortable in the wedding as we didn’t get respected as guests. I believe if we were white, the bride’s father wouldn’t ask us that kind of rude

Institutional racism may be intentional or unintentional. Jim Crowe is a great example of institutional racism. Jim Crow laws were the name of the racist caste system put in place to segregate African Americans, Hispanics and any ethnic minority. Individual Racism- the belief that one’s own race is superior to another (racial prejudice) and behavior that suppresses members of the so called inferior race (racial discrimination). An example of individual racism in the scenario is Ms. Welch's description of how Native Indian children were taken from their communities and placed in schools away from their families. This was done in with the belief by the White European culture was superior and the desire to drive out the Native Indian traditions in future generations.
In the lives of minority students, education is seen as essential. It’s a dream, one that we are still trying to interpret. If we know nothing else, we know that education is important because it determines the future one is going to have. The major problem is that the education of minority students before college is poor. This deficiency causes great conflict for minority students in adapting themselves to new educational habits. Lack of good study skills makes it difficult for a minority student to control one’s time management and concentration. While these students are trying to change their study habits, there is another variable that could help or distract them from fixing their weaknesses. It is true that parents and professors do have an influence upon us. These people play a big part in the education of students, but the impact of their persuasion is not always positive. Despite all the struggles that a minority student faces, I believe people in this group can find the secret to becoming educated and successful individuals.
It was thought that the color of people 's skin could say exactly who they are. These ridiculous ideas of knowing who people are based on what they look like were derived from stereotypes that have been around for a while. These stereotypes came from the Ku Klux Klan, also known as the KKK, who spread these ideas like wildfire. These ideas were drilled into people 's heads, and these ideas were taken as true facts, and this influenced them to do actions that can 't be proven to be racist, but have a racist motive. This concept is highly seen in institutional racism. The KKK spread many ideas that made people who were different seem like savages who did not con form to society. Laws were set into place to prevent discrimination. Despite laws, these stereotypes are still seen today and thus we see institutional racism.
In public schools, students are subjected to acts of institutional racism that may change how they interact with other students. In the short story “Drinking Coffee Elsewhere” by Packer, readers are allowed to view firsthand how institutionalized racism affects Dina, who is the main character in the story. Packer states “As a person of color, you shouldn’t have to fit in any white, patriarchal system” (Drinking Coffee Elsewhere 117). The article “Disguised Racism in Public Schools” by Brodbelt states “first, the attitudes of teachers toward minority group pupils” (Brodbelt 699). Like the ideas in the article “Disguised Racism in Public Schools” Dina encounters institutionalized oppression on orientation day at Yale.

Other than that, what brings racism into our nation is because of the classes of society, which draw in us into honing racial separation. Racial segregation is the point at which a man is dealt with less positively than someone else in a comparable circumstance on account of their race, shading, plummet, national or ethnic inception or migrant status. This had totally changed the world in creating division, such as the terms of “black white” or “wealthy poor”. Racist behaviour may be direct (overt) or indirect (covert) in particular. Direct racial discrimination is the unfair or unequal treatment of a person or a group on racial grounds. An example would be an employer who won't hire someone on the basis of their cultural or linguistic background.
Race relations are always a scary or uncomfortable topic for people to discuss amongst groups of different ethnicities and racial identities. It is a long standing tradition in the United States to walk a fine line and use politically correct terms in the above mentioned setting but to feel perfectly comfortable to speak freely when in a setting surrounded by likeminded people who share similar political affiliations and race. This is the main reason discussions surrounding the idea of race are too often avoided in today’s school systems and in society in general. It is vital to understand that students will step foot into the classroom with a variety of cultures zipped up in their backpacks, and it is our job as educators to make sure that equality is instilled/taught in our classrooms. The second a student feels a sense of discrimination, whether from ourselves or their fellow classmate(s), is when the safe and comforting environment of the classroom begins to diminish. Diversity in classrooms can open student’s minds to all the world has to offer. At times diversity and understanding of culture, deviant experiences and perspectives can be difficult to fulfill, but with appropriate strategies and resources, it can lead students to gain a high level of respect for those unlike them, preferably from a judgmental and prejudiced view. Diversity has a broad range of spectrums. Students from all across the continent; students from political refugees, indigenous Americans, and immigrants bring their cultural and linguistic skills to American classrooms. Students not only bring their cultural and linguistic skills, but they bring their ethnicity, talents, and skills.
The concepts included in providing a more diverse, multicultural education are requiring teachers to review their own issues and prejudices while expanding their knowledge of the many cultures that make up the classroom. These efforts help the educator recognize the various individual and cultural differences of each student, as well as gain an understanding on how these differences impact the learning process. The purpose of this paper is to reflect upon individual and cultural difference research and why diverse students struggle to succeed in school.
