“The course of true love never did run smooth.” (Shakespeare 15) In Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream there are multitudes of love stories between those who were meant to be together and those who fall for someone because of reasons that they do not quite understand. There are as well the love stories between friends. Hermia and Lysander adore each other and all they could ever want is to be with each other. Lysander then fell under the influence of the love potion that forced him to love Helena. Because of that confusion with the love potion, Hermia and Helena’s friendship is tested. These are just a few examples of the many varying encounters in this novel. The love story between Lysander and Hermia would be impeccable if it were not for Hermia’s father Egeus. Egeus wants Hermia to marry Demetrius and he will not settle for anyone else. He says that if she does not follow his orders then he has the right to kill her. Hermia’s only choices are to marry Demetrius, as her father wishes, become a nun, or die. Helena blames Hermia for Demetrius not loving her. She thought that Hermia was stealing Demetrius from her. Their relationship was never the greatest because of this. Although Hermia tried to explain that she wanted nothing to do with Demetrius, Helena still believed that she was lusting over him. When Lysander and Demetrius had received the potion and fallen in love with Helena, Hermia blamed Helena for taking Lysander away from her. “O me! You juggler, you cankerblossom, you thief of love! What, have you come by night and stol’n my heart from him?” (Shakespeare 103) In a way each girl thought that the other had stolen her true love.
