Internal and External conflict both add a twist to a story. Conflict is a struggle or problem a character must overcome. It affects the character and sometimes can change how the story plays out. In “To the Top of Everest” by Laurie Skreslet with Elizabeth MacLeod, the main character experiences internal and external conflict. In this story, internal conflict is more important to the plot.
“To the top of Everest” has many scenes displaying conflict.The character experiences external conflict with the mountain and internal conflict with himself. An example of external conflict in the text is “Now the bridge ended 1.5 m (5ft.) from the far wall. On my side, the end of the ladder was frozen into the ice, but the other end hung 30 m (100 ft.)
These two men have a conflict that they do not find themselves in their world. They feel that they do not belong in the world that they are living in. Ender is living in a place where the government controls a system that everyone must follow. Ender does not believe that this system was right for the people. He is fighting with his internal and external conflict. His external conflict involves his struggles to overcome the obstacles places in his path, and the internal conflict is the result of the external that affect his emotional life.
In the memoir Within Reach: My Everest Story by Mark Pfetzer and Jack Galvin, the author Mark Pfetzer is faced with an extremely amazing yet scary challenge of climbing Mount Everest. Each event is the story has something to do with the nature that is around them at that moment but Pfetzer shows the readers that nature can be a way of life.
Every story has a conflict. Conflicts can be either internal or external. Internal conflicts occur within a character’s mind. The main character in Seventh Grade, Victor, deals with an internal conflict. External conflicts occur with a character and an outside force. The main character in Melting Pot deals with an external conflict. Both stories’ conflicts have winners.
“We were hauled into the Border Patrol van and driven to San Luis Obispo, the immigration headquarters. There we were asked endless questions and given papers to sign” (6). This is an example of conflict because it explains when the Jimenez family was caught and were sent back to Mexico. This is important because this helps the reader understand how so many people during this time tried to immigrate to the United States but were caught and sent back to their homeland. “Tears came to her eyes as she forced a smile. Roberto and I climbed onto the bus. We took our seat, wiped fog off the window, and waved” (17). This is an example of conflict because this was when Francisco and Roberto had to live by themselves without the rest of their family. This is important because it shows the extent that their parents would reach to make sure that they had a bright future ahead of them in the United States. Therefore, the author uses conflict to show all of the struggles that the Jimenez family had to deal with during the story.
Internal conflict is something that happens in all of our lives almost every day, and we don’t even think about it. The definition of internal conflict is when the problem is happening to the main character and his or her self. The book The Running Dream, by Wendelin Van Draanen, has a lot of internal conflict as well as a lot of external conflict which is when the problem is happening to the main character, and some type of outside force. In this book, the main character, Jess, loves running, and on her way to one of her track meets she got into a car accident. She was taken to the hospital, and the doctors had to amputate her leg below her right knee because it was mangled beyond any chance of possible repair. Another internal conflict is how Lilly feels responsible for her mother?s death. When she was four, she accidentally shot her mom, and wasn?t able to forgive herself. The reason she runs away in the first place is because her dad tells her that her mom left her, which is both an internal, and man versus man conflict. She?s mad at her dad for saying it, but can?t fully convince herself that it isn?t true. There?s a man versus society conflict when men beat up Rossaleen because of her color, and another internal conflict when May is so overcome with grief that she cant stop crying.
The main category of conflict is character vs self. This is when a character has an internal problem. They fight throughout the story to overcome that problem. The first example of character vs self is Elie. Throughout the story Elie is fighting himself to keep himself going. This is because of all the things happening around him. It drove him to the point where he almost gave up because his legs were
“What?” Sun-Jo was appalled at the fact that Peak had decided not to conquer the summit of Mount Everest. How could he give up such a glorifying moment? Peak would have been the youngest boy to ever reach the summit, however, he realized he didn’t want the fame. Sun-Jo was only a few days older than him, and if Sun-Jo reached the summit and Peak did not, he would be the youngest person to summit Everest. Also, Sun-Jo’s family was living on the other side of the mountain and he needed to get to the other side so that he could reconnect with his family. Since Peak avoided his mother’s advice to think of himself and only himself, he did not make it to the top. Many other characters, unlike Peak, were selfish and although it helped some, others were less fortunate.
I believe the conflict in the story is an internal one. I think it is the conflict between the old woman's will power and Mother Nature. She encounters many obstacles that would influence most people to give up but she has motivation to get her task done. These encounters include a bush catching onto her dress, a scarecrow frightening her and discouragement from a white man. She also had to climb hills, cross streams and crawl under barbed wire fences which is certainly not considered an easy task for an elderly woman.. If I was forced to deal with these obstacles I know that I would most likely have turned around but her will power was too strong to let Mother Nature win.

Conflict is the driving point for all exploits. Everyone faces dilemmas every time they decide on a course of action. Whether its what route you take to work or what you are going to major in, dilemmas are widespread and are vastly different in the degree with which they will affect one’s life. Dilemma is a very prevalent aspect of life, and as such it is equally as prevalent in literature. Conflict is a main component of good literature.
