Many may wonder as to how F. Scott Fitzgerald may have demonstrated the idea of the American dream in the 1920’s through the Great Gatsby? However, taking a look at the various characters in the novel and the different ways in which they have been depicted it is quite evident that F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays the idea of the American dream through the character of Great Gatsby. Despite being narrated by Nick Holloway the book seems much closely related to a memoir of Gatsby than a novel; due to the author’s exceptional use of imagery throughout. Evidence of which was clearly presented when unveiling the contents of the letter received by Daisy. A letter from Gatsby saying that he was alright; however, he would only come back to her once he had made something of himself, a man who would be worthy of Daisy’s love. Moreover, as one progresses throughout the story Nick begins to expand on who Gatsby really was and where he truly wanted to be, to be a man with all the wealth in the world. One of these ways would have to include the letter sent by Gatsby to Daisy right before her marriage; the letter stating that all he would need is five years to make himself the man worthy of her love. It was this particular time that Gatsby had asked for that portrayed to the audience that in the world of opportunity all one needs is only a few years to bring their dreams to reality; thereby, referring back to the American dream and how all one needs is time to fulfill their greatest desires of wealth.
