“To achieve greatness one should live as if they will never die”, Francios De LA Rochefoucauld. With this quote in consideration, it is easy to understand that in order to be great, you must be able to stand out amongst your surroundings. In the case of the novel, The Great Gatsby, we discover this rarity of greatness in the central character, Jay Gatsby. Gatsby evicts the greatness that people so longlining strive for by exploring his fullest potential, where he carries uncommon characteristics. Thus, allowing him to stand out from the rest of his society and becoming Great. From the first couple of chapters that we were introduced to Gatsby, we could instantly tell that he was not your average and or ordinary person living in the 1920’s. However, in Gatsby’s case, he is almost able to achieve actions and events would be deemed to be considered impossible due to love. This is evident when Jordan tells Nick, “Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay”(78). Here it is heavily insinuated that Gatsby was able to gain wealth by buying an expensive that was close by his love, Daisy. With the knowledge of knowing that Gatsby was once poor, it is quite impressive for him accomplish his wealth. In addition, Gatsby is almost able to recreate the past due to his love Daisy. Throughout the second portion of the novel, Fitzgerald writes about the rekindling of Gatsby and Daisy. Although this rekindling ultimately leads to the death of Gatsby, it is still credible for Gatsby attempting and almost achieving recreating the past. The other characters in, The Great Gatsby, are presented in a way where they do not love, nor do they give love to others, in turn, they do not reach for what they really strive for.
