Good and Evil “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is a short story in which Flannery O’Conner, the author, used irony and realism details throughout the story. This short story is very intriguing but is a little weird. The thoughts of reading this story is unusual. I noticed several literary terms being used throughout the story but allusion, irony, and realism stood out for me. Allusion is statement that refers to something without mentioning it directly. The family was headed out for a summer vacation. The family was planning a trip to Florida. The grandmother, an old, chatty lady, really wanted to go the Tennessee, but her son, Bailey, wanted to go to Florida. The grandmother tried being very manipulative to get Bailey to take her to Tennessee. The grandmother tried to warn Bailey that a prisoner had escaped, "Here this fellow that calls himself The Misfit is aloose from the Federal Pen and headed toward Florida and you read here what it says he did to these people. Just you read it. I wouldn 't take my children in any direction with a criminal like that aloose in it. I couldn 't answer to my conscience if I did." (O’Conner 352) The story did not say nor suggest what the man has done or either did he had some buddies.
