Discourse Community Project
1. The Animal Science Department at Utah State University is an academic discourse community. Majors within the Animal Science department are Animal and Dairy Science, Biotechnology, Bioveterinary Science, and Equine Sciences and Management. The department lies within the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences. Disciplines it’s related to are journalism, landscaping, graphic design and more.
Members typically hold jobs regarding livestock, foods, sales, management, business, government agencies, caretaking, research, technology, and much more. You have to be accepted into the program to become a member. Freshman are supposed to be in good standing for admission and transfer students must have a certain GPA. …show more content…

The Animal Science Department communicates through pictures and words. The main form of communication is social media. Pictures and messages are posted to platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and on few occasions YouTube. Occasionally information for opportunities is given during classes and meetings either through powerpoint slide, written, or verbally. Handouts, posters, emails, art, and flyers are a common use of communication as well.
3. Writing is important because essays, notes, reminders, reports and other types of communication that require writing are used often within this community. Writing is extremely important regarding research and experiments because you need to remember steps, keep a tab on measurements and amounts, test quality and hypothesis, and write many other things to keep everything on track.
4. My discourse community does communicate in nonverbal ways. While sitting in the advising office I noticed many different ways of nonverbal communication right before my eyes. There were magazines on the table in the advising office, powerpoints full of information on TV’s, fliers and art. I have also noticed a lot of notices and announcements posted on Canvas. I talked with my academic advisor who advises the Animal Science students and she said she writes every single day by corresponding with potential students and writing a lot of letters of references. Some emails are very detailed when students want to know about veterinary medicine so she has to be extremely specific and sends out information. She said she sends about 50-60 emails a day. She also keeps detailed notes with students during advising meetings and has notes always scattered around her desk.
7. Subjects that particularly interest me in the Animal Science community are exotic animals, the way things work, breeding, breeds of animals, but most of all, animal care and nursing. Are there issues you’d like to explore that are relevant to your discourse community? I would like to learn more about ASPCA and other organizations that are against using animals for products. I also would like to learn more about abused animals and ways to properly care for them. I’d like to explore an Animal Rights organization or group and better understand their
