The novel ‘Great Expectations’, by Charles Dickens, follows a young, socially inexperienced orphaned boy called Pip, through his journey, emphasizing his inability to adapt to life and relationships around him. His story is told through the eyes of the older Pip and highlights the aspects of society which Dickens disapproves of. His techniques throughout the novel help to give a better understanding of Pip's life. When Pip first encounters the escaped convict in the graveyard, the tense relationship between them is obvious to the reader, but all is revealed in chapter 39, where the readers meet both Pip and the convict again, and witness a role-reversal between them. The weather in the novel is significant; Dickens describes it in such a way that it creates an atmosphere using foreboding ominous imagery. This story of a lonely orphan in a mixed up world provides plenty of opportunities to consider the difficultly of an impoverished childhood in the nineteenth century and how hard it might have been for such a naïve and gullible young boy to survive in this time, especially with such harsh family circumstances. The theme of injustice, which is inherent throughout, explains some of the reasons why he has so many ‘great expectations.’ Charles Dickens’ novels criticize the injustices of his time, especially the brutal treatment of the poor in a society sharply divided by differences of wealth. He lived through that world at an early age; he saw the bitter side of the social class system and had wanted it to be exposed, so people could see the exploitation that the system rests on. Dickens has conveyed many lessons to the readers one of which is that you can't judge a book by its cover. We know this because in Chapter 1, the readers reactions’ to the appearance of Magwitch is a disgusting, sinful creature, ‘a fearful man’, but in Chapter 39, the reactions are the opposite; we warm to the convict, and see how the convict repays Pip by becoming his benefactor. The morals are just as relevant today because people are stereotypical and place a judgement based on their appearance, like in the novel Pip is described as a shy, timid, innocent little boy; however, in chapter 39 his true colours are shown. We see the grown up snobbish Pip, where his better class and status has changed his demeanour; immediately breaking the stereotype readers had placed on him.
In Charles Dickens novel Great Expectations, the main character, Pip might seem like an innocent boy growing up to be a respected gentleman. However, in Julian Moynahan’s literary criticism “Parallels Between Pip, Orlick, and Drummle,” different sides to this fundamental character are shown. At first sight, Orlick and Drummle seem like complete contradictory characters to Pip. They could be portrayed almost as villains compared to the innocent Pip. Nonetheless, when different parts in the novel are studied, this opposite comparison changes to an eerily similar one. In Dickens novel, Great Expectations, Pip shows striking parallels with both Orkick and Drummle, even though he disapproves of actions that they take and how they handle themselves.

‘Great Expectations’ showcases the variety of ways in which Pip discovers a sense of belonging and makes us question our own choices in life and how belonging is not always apparent at the time. Relationships and places are closely intertwined with a person’s sense of acceptance and can make all the difference in being fulfilled mentally in life which is shown in both a negative and positive note in ‘Great Expectations’ and ‘Pleasantville’.
Dickens uses the parallel structure in this sentence to emphasize Pip’s uneasiness and dread regarding the incident with Magwitch. Pip is lying in bed late at night with a secret and becomes aware that he is more afraid of himself and what he is capable of in relation to the young man who threatened to take his heart and liver. In the first half of the quotation, Dickens uses repetition to accentuate Pip’s “mortal terror” towards the convict and the similar structure of the phrases stresses the panic he faces when he realizes his actions could result in a matter much worse than he planned. After being forced to face the dark and humble reality of his "great expectations" and his behaviour, Pip is never. the same as the other. Books with morals were a good way to criticise the social system and so bring abut a more just system. This was because there were no TV’s, no radios or internet to inform people so the majority read. During Pips early years he and Joe share a relationship based on love and trust, like father and son or two brothers. They are united in their suffering because of the cruel Mrs Joe. For example she gives them both horrible tar water to drink.
Magwitch first meets pip at the graveyard on the marshes, from this we see that pip is a lonely child, who has lost his mother and father. Magwitch threatens to kill pip and " rip out his heart and liver" unless pip obeys Magwitch's orders to bring him some "wittles" and drink for him. The relationship as it first blossomed is full of fear and terror and we pick up immediately that Magwitch is in control of the situation, yet there is still the fear lingering over him being seen or handed over to the authorities if Magwitch made any mistake to be seen by anyone else, or if pip told somebody else where he was. Pip and Magwitch's first meeting place is highly ironic, because pip is visiting his parents graves and then ironically Magwitch turns up, who will later be pips benefactor and will act and play the role of Pip's surrogate farther. Pathetic fallacy is used in this graveyard scene as it is set in the marshes at the dead of night with " the cold air whipping" around them, to resemble the scary emotions that pip feels when he is being threatened by Magwitch pip passes a gibbet on the marshes which is also ironic as when Magwitch comes back to see pip later on it the novel there is the fear that he might be hanged. It also sets the setting to resemble death. The night black sky also will resemble death and deep dark fears. The graveyard is a " bleak over grown place, with nettles" the description makes the scene scarier, and the overgrown weeds could be where others are hiding. The setting is very gothic, in true Victorian style and when contemanoray readers read this they were automatically prepared for something unpleasant to happen. When Magwitch orders pip to get him some food and a drink for him from where he lived or where he could, pip could take the advantage of this situation, and tell the authorities or tell his guardians, but he doesn't.
Within both ‘Great Expectations’ and ‘Jane Eyre’, Dickens and Bronte present examinations of social status and wealth through the use of their main protagonists Pip and Jane, in turn, both are highly critical of the existing Victorian class hierarchy. Both novels are told from the perspective of the main protagonists and take the form of a bildungsroman allowing the reader to witness their desire for self-improvement which drives both novels. However, the narrative structure of both novels varies drastically; in ‘Great Expectations’ Pip’s journey to happiness is circular and ends where it began whilst, Jane’s journey takes a linear form and happiness is found in a place far from home.
Throughout Dickens’ novel Great Expectations, the character, personality, and social beliefs of Pip undergo complete transformations as he interacts with an ever-changing pool of characters presented in the book. Pip’s moral values remain more or less constant at the beginning and the end; however, it is evident that in the time between, the years of his maturation and coming of adulthood, he is fledgling to find his place in society. Although Pip is influenced by many characters throughout the novel, his two most influential role models are: Estella, the object of Miss Havisham’s revenge against men, and Magwitch, the benevolent convict. Exposing himself to such diverse characters Pip has to learn to discern right from wrong and chose role models who are worthy of the title.

Pips progression and subsequent evolution, though the novel allows for the reader to get a sense of the life you could have had in that era. This journey that our protagonist goes on shows us the effect of wealth and being a grateful human being. Dickens chose the this coming of age genre to show the struggles of growing up special in such a vital and ever changing world. The changes that a person goes through when they start to mature.

On the surface, Great Expectations appears to be simply the story of Pip from his early childhood to his early adulthood, and a recollection of the events and people that Pip encounters throughout his life. In other words, it is a well written story of a young man's life growing up in England in the early nineteenth century. At first glance, it may appear this way, an interesting narrative of youth, love, success and failure, all of which are the makings of an entertaining novel. However, Great Expectations is much more. Pip's story is not simply a recollection of the events of his past. The recollection of his past is important in that it is essential in his development throughout the novel, until the very end. The experiences that Pip has as a young boy are important in his maturation into young adulthood.
The main character, Pip, is a gentle character. His traits include humbleness, kindness, and lovingness. These traits are most likely the cause of his childhood poverty. In the beginning of the story, Pip is a mild mannered little boy who goes on with his own humble life. That, though, will change as he meets Magwich, a thief and future benefactor. Pip’s kindness goes out to help the convict, Magwich when he gives food and clothing to him. Magwich tells Pip that he’ll never forget his kindness and will remember Pip always and forever. This is the beginning of Pip’s dynamic change. Throughout the novel, Great Expectations, the character, Pip gradually changes from a kind and humble character to a character that is bitter, then snobbish and finally evolves into the kind and loving character which he was at the beginning of the story.
As a bildungsroman, Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations presents the growth and development of Philip Pirrip, better known as Pip. Pip is both the main character in the story and the narrator, telling his tale many years after the events take place. Pip goes from being a young boy living in poverty in the marsh country of Kent, to being a gentleman of high status in London. Pip’s growth and maturation in Great Expectations lead him to realize that social status is in no way related to one’s real character.
