Over the summer, I completed my community service hours at Ohio Valley Medical Center. At the beginning, I was afraid of whether I would like it but after my first day there I could not wait to go back the following week. It gave me some experience in the hospital since I want to work in the Intensive Care Unit when I am older. I met so many volunteers, new and old, that taught me a lot about volunteering and the hospital. I would not give up my summer involvement at the hospital for anything. I chose this project because when I grow up I want to become a nurse, so volunteering at OVMC was a great opportunity. There was a health fair last year at the school; I met these two nice women that asked me I would like to volunteer at the hospital, and I told them I would love too. When my family and I talked about it, we all seemed like we were on the same page about it and then we filled them out and sent them in the mail the next morning. I got a call a couple of days later to come in for an interview. Another reason I chose to do this project is because I needed to reach my amount of hours for HSTA. Halfway through the summer break, I reached my hours that I had left to do, but I loved volunteering there. I still had next summer and the school year to complete my hours; I had so much fun going there! I completed my service at OVMC in Wheeling, and my first day at the hospital was pretty scary. I chose to escort patients, stamp parking tickets, and deliver the mail, flowers, and newspapers. I have come to realize that the hospital was not as big as it looked on the outside. I learned the ropes very quickly and soon enough I did not need anyone to show me where to go. I was constantly on my feet and was never bored, unless it was a ve... ... middle of paper ... ...ing to apply to the hospital and work there. OVMC is a great hospital and I would love to spend the rest of my life working there as an ICU nurse. It made an impact on my life by giving me experience in and around the hospital, even though I am not medical staff. Thanks to this experience I am more familiar with the surroundings of the hospital and the staff as well. Volunteering there was a great experience, and if anyone were to want to volunteer there I would strongly recommend it. Volunteering at the hospital indeed was a life changing experience. I chose it because I wanted to go into the medical field, not just for community service. I learned a lot of new things that I will take on and remember throughout my life and cherish the memories, that place has given me. I cannot wait until next summer because I am going to volunteer there more than I had last year.
I felt as if I was able to make a change even though it wasn't a major change. I also loved working with kids of all ages ranging from kindergarten to 8th grade. They all brought a different personality which I enjoyed. Overall, volunteering anywhere helps someone make a change in someones life and their own even though they may not notice it. There are many people who are in need of volunteers all the time and not many people get the opportunity to volunteer during their lifetime.
...ecause it gave me an opportunity to hear the perspective of other health care professionals that are not in the same field as me. I also got to learn what role each health care professional could contribute to the Triple Aim goal. Also, this experience would make it easier for me to work with other professionals during my course of study and after I graduate because I have been a little exposure to what it is going to be like discussing and trying to figure out ways we can contribute to the Triple Aim goal together as a team.
Oddly enough, I liked giving obese, old patients bed baths, helping them to the bathroom, and cleaning their bed pans. But, don’t get me wrong. It wasn’t exactly what I loved doing, but I knew it was part of the job, and I willingly did the dirty work. By the end of my junior year, I knew I loved the hospital environment and wanted to eventually work there; however, I just didn’t know in what capacity. Fortunately, during a slow day in my last semester of shadowing, a nurse asked me if I would like to see a surgery being performed. I quickly accepted the offer, and I got to watch a surgeon perform an eye lift procedure. This experience, one of the most interesting I had ever witnessed, made me realize the area of the hospital that interested me most, the operating room. More specifically, I wanted to be an orthopedic surgeon. The path to become an orthopedic surgeon is not a quick nor easy one. Another service that I have done has been to volunteer at the West Campus Hospital gift shop. It was a great experience for me; if I had the time I would make the effort to volunteer again. For people that is good at socializing with others and love organizing I would recommend volunteering at the gift shop.
Throughout the fall semester I did community service at a thrift shop and soup kitchen in Lawrence. There I experienced things I have never encountered before in my life. These experiences have taught me a lot, and have truly made me look at America's underprivileged, in a new light.
Working in the Emergency room for Norwegian American Hospital was a very memorable experience. Throughout my service I got the opportunity to meet people, hear their stories and provide compassion to them in their time of need. Working in the emergency is just not treating medically treating a patient, but rather connecting with them on a personal level. I have always desired a job that helped people on a medical and social work aspect. The Emergency combines both aspects and through this experience I further affirmed my calling in life. I am going to take the class Practicum, which is a health science class where I get to work at a hospital and learn how to become a medical assistant. At the end of the year I will take the licensing exam and hopefully will be able to get a job as a medical assistant. I am also thinking of rejoining HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) because there are medical volunteering opportunities as well as school medical competitions. I now volunteer with the other members at elementary schools, parades downtown, etc. I think volunteering in any form is very good for teaching the values of service, how it’s important to give back to the community and help those who have have helped you. I volunteer for AVID and NHS.
Why I want to volunteer I am directionless. Lost in a sea of people; people who all seem to know what they want to do with their lives. Volunteering can help me find a direction, a path that I want to be on. Assisting patients and workers provides more information on working in a hospital than any course or the internet can provide.
I performed my community service at a local elementary school. I chose this place because of its relative ease, and it was also an area I could easily get to and from. I started my first day very confused and out of character. The school was very bland, and it brought back memories of the time that I attended elementary school. Upon first arrival, I met the principal of the school.
...the opportunity to act as a triage nurse taking weights and blood pressures of our 1600 patients and seeing first-hand how hard it must be to receive quality medical care in their country. Many walked for hours and then stood waiting to be seen in the rain. To them, medical care is more a privilege than a right. This also seems to be true in the United States where the uninsured are turned away from many hospitals to ones, which often lack the resources for expensive operations. This experience has inspired me to serve the underserved.
At the beginning of this volunteer experience, I walked in hopeful that I would gain some knowledge about the different careers that the medical field possesses, but I got so much more than that. I learned that community service is about making an impact in the lives of other members who share my community.
A reflection of my volunteering experience can be summarized in two words: Life-changing. It is hard to explain the feelings that occur when you involve yourself in selfless acts for your community, such as volunteering. There is a feeling in your heart that you cannot ignore, maybe it is the happiness you feel or the overflow of emotions in helping others. In other words, it is a feeling in which you want to share with others. Maybe with a friend, maybe a classmate, maybe a family member, or maybe even a stranger. Either way, spreading how life-changing volunteering can be is a great start to making a positive change in your community by simply by involving others.
As soon as I got to the floor one of the nurses pulled into a room to see an SVT. She said the ambulance would be bringing the patient in and this would be a good thing for me to see. At that moment I felt some my anxiety lessen. I was happy to see that the nurses wanted me to learn and see whatever I could. I loved it in the ER. I got to see a variety of cases that were new to me. The nurse I shadowed would explain everything to me when we left the room and if an emergency came in she would ask the other nurses if I could observe. I loved the way the staff worked together. A patient would come in and the primary nurse would be in the room and another nurse would be on the other side of the patient helping. Nursing is by far a career that takes teamwork and in the ER you could really see it. I like that in the ER you see all different cases and this helps keep your skills
I also had the privilege of helping with the Meals on Wheels non profit organization. My grandfather used to be a Meals on Wheels recipient and he would share with me how he enjoyed looking forward to their company and a hot meal daily. I volunteered because I wanted to give back and help someone else’s loved one in the same way. It was very rewarding delivering hot meals to people who didn’t have the means of getting one as well as being there for them to talk to. Overall, it was a very humbling experience, it made me realize just how blessed I am and how much I take for granted daily.
I volunteered at East Parkside Nursing Home through my church 's mentoring program. At first, I was somewhat uncomfortable volunteering at a nursing home because my great-grandfather, among many others, was mistreated in a nursing home. But, as the day went on and we engaged in activities with the residents, I eventually calmed down and got into the smooth of things. We had one-on-one contact with the seniors, and we learned about their lives and families. One of the seniors was a veteran who fought in the Vietnam War and he told all of the volunteers a few short war stories. For several residents, their families rarely visited them, so they genuinely appreciated the volunteers spending time with them. Later, we made holiday cards and sang Christmas carols for the senior citizens. They seemed so elated and pleased, which made me feel so fulfilled that I could make someone 's day by doing something so
