Evolution of the US Constitution There were several drafted documents prior to 1787 that had huge influence on our United States Constitution. These documents helped shape America into the country that we have today as far our justice system, responsibility of government and equality of rights for all. Each document led to another that built off the previous and further explained the ideas of the American people. These documents eventually led to the United States Constitution, the oldest federal constitution still in use (lc-ugrad1.gcu.edu).Out of all of the documents preceding the U.S. Constitution, there are five that the will be discussed in regards to their purpose and significance they had in contributing to the creation of the US Constitution. Magna Carta 1215: King John put his seal on the Magna Carta at Runnymede, England, a document that granted certain rights and privileges to his barons and provided a model for later bills of rights (digitalhistory.uh.edu/). During this time, King John seemed to be exercising power to achieve his own selfish agenda. He was taxing the wealthy barons to support war against France (encyclopedia.com). The barons and the other occupants of England were clearly not in support of the war or funding it for that matter. Another issue that Magna Carta addresses is found within Chapter 39: No free man shall be arrested or imprisoned or disseized [property taken] or outlawed or exiled or in any way victimized, neither will we attack him or send anyone to attack him, except by the lawful judgment of his peers or by the law of the land (encyclopedia.com).
