Evolution in the School System

There have been public schools that try to bring God back into schools, but the parents of many students have complained about “religion” being taught to the children. With God taken out of the school system, there are students who do not see a point in life. From being taught that we are here by a cosmic explosion to evolving from apes. With that thought in mind there isn’t a point to life. We are just here and then we are gone.

Many evolutionists view this trend as a serious threat to the advancement of science and have vowed to do everything in their power to stop the teaching of creation in the public school system. Most evolutionists now view creationism as nothing more than a particular version of fundamentalist Christianity with no valid scientific content. One hundred-fifty years ago such a theory for the origin and history of the earth and life would have been termed absurd. Today, however, those who reject the idea of random evolutionary processes being responsible for designing life and shaping the geological features of the earth are termed religious, unscientific fanatics. Today, throughout the industrialized world, the moment children are able to respond to their environment, they are constantly bombarded with the doctrine of evolution.

Another idea is that which is held by those who subscribe to the idea of scientific creationism. Scientific creationism, as it relates to this topic, states that God was the creator, and that evolution is simply a means, developed by Him, of conservation. Even if the Book of Genesis happened to find a place in the English curriculum of public schools, or an any other curriculum for that matter, it would still violate the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States. Even if all these hurdles were overcome, it would still be hotly debated by different religions as to which story of creation to teach.

Some states have, in the past, outlawed the teaching of evolution because the public didn’t agree with it, even though almost all scientists had accepted it. The children in school at that time were deprived of important information. There is no reason why a scientifically recognized subject should be banned from schools simply because the public doesn’t “agree” with it. Our society is obligated to keep our citizens informed. A direct vote on class curriculum only perpetuates the older generation’s perspective, as their children grow up to take their place.

Which if you really look at it that is the fair and right thing to do. Although, they also say to completely cut out evolution and just not teach either of them since we can’t come to an agreement that fits everyone’s beliefs. In my perspective evolution should be taught in school along with Gods ways. Without evolution being addressed then we cut out a big chunk of science that needs to be taught. In the same way, teaching about how God created the world lets kids think among themselves what they believe by giving an opposing side In the articles “Critiques of Darwinism Evolution Should Be Taught in Science Class” an “Intelligent Design Should Not Be Taught in Science Class” they point out why they think evolution should/shouldn’t be taught in schools.

Evolution is a broadly accepted theory throughout the science community. It is a theory, just as the Copernican model was a theory at one point. Some religious institutions believe that evolution should not be taught in science class and that the creationist ideas from the Bible should be taught. For example, in Arkansas, an act was passed that “mandated that ‘creation science’ be given equal time in public schools with evolution” (McLean) Although McLean v. Arkansas Board of Education struck down this law, it still does not detract from the fact that the law was even considered. That is like saying we will teach Aristotle’s form of chemistry and physics, along with more modern and accepted scientific ideas.

The courts hold the decisions on what is allowed and what is not. When the people of America fight for equal treatment, freedom to teach, or critical thinking, they are shot down in the name of religion. The law doesn’t allow teaching creationism, sitting separation of church and state, but this law is not being defined correctly. Creationism is science, and evolution could be considered a religion. Both creationism and evolution should be taught in schools, because textbooks and teachers are censored and biased when teaching just evolution in the class room.

His theory, backed by scientific analysis, had dismissed the idea of a single deity creating all life on Earth. It is not like Darwin had a personal agenda against religion or anything, but he did create what would become the main evidence used by atheists to disprove the Bible. Now his theory is still theory, and is yet to be proven as a fact, but is still believed by much of the scientific society as a fact. The struggle between the religious and the atheistic will rage for many years, but where the battle will cause the most damage is in the American school system. The thesis of this paper is, teachers must be required to teach evolution; which is already in place in the American school system, but teachers cannot be allowed to teach evolution as a fact, or evidence disproving the existence of a god.

Causing much controversy among the populous of the world. Religious parents want their kids to learn their beliefs instead of the proven or widely accepted scientific reasoning, and non-religious parents being angered by these religious fanatics trying to force their beliefs onto the public school system. Intelligent Design (ID) is the new fighter in this debate. It tries to bring together Evolution and creationism, by explaining that a higher being created the universe, and set everything into motion, but at the same time not disproving Evolution.

Intelligent Design is not testable and states that organisms appear abruptly however, Darwin in “An Origin of a Species” explains the commonly accepted idea of how organisms came about through the idea of evolution. In addition, teachers may not even have the educational science knowledge to teach such highly complicated theories. According to Plutzer “Teachers in all states are expected to meet certain minimum requirements for certification. But this does not mean all science teachers are equally knowledgeable about evolutionary theory or science generally” (Plutzer, 2011, p. 620).
