As people look back on the sport of basketball, many would notice it was once six on six instead of five on five. “Women’s basketball has grown rapidly since the 1970’s. Until then women and girls had been allowed to play only a six-player game in which offensive and defensive players were rooted to one half of the court” (__________). It seems completely bizarre to even think about the game with twelve players on the court rather than ten. Many things changed when they transitioned into the new system of basketball. Defense, offense, amount of points scored and the rules within the offense and defense are all things that drastically changed. Transitioning from one way of basketball to the next might be hard if change is difficult for someone. The offense was so different when six on six was still going on. Six on six basketball only
Forwards were the only ones allowed to shoot the ball. The three girls that were on offense stayed on offense the whole time. Never did those girls go to the other side of the court. When it came to dribbling the ball, only two dribbles were allowed. After that player took the maximum amount of dribbles, another teammate had to get open for a pass or that player had to shoot the ball. Six on six basketball didn’t have three point shots. Everything was worth two points, no matter where the shot was taken from. Another thing, if the defense rebounded the ball, they had to get it to their teammates on the other side of the court without the other team stepping in front and getting the pass. For free throws, they were worth the same amount of points, but they lined up differently on the side. Six on Six lined up below the big block. Today, some would say the offense that most high schoolers have grown up to learn about is a lot simpler.
Rashim told Colin and Andrew that they needed to help him stand out this game. Colin said, “Rashim, we want you to go to the NBA as much you want to. We got you and we're gonna make you the MVP of this game.” Rashim knew that his friends would always be by his side to help him. The timeout was over and it was almost half-time. LaSalle was down by 8 and knew they needed to come back to stay in this game. Wissahickon missed a shot, and Andrew got the rebound and passed it to Rashim and he made a three pointer! With 4 seconds Colin got a steal and threw a bullet pass to Rashim, and he got the shot off with one second left, and he made it! The crowd was filled with excitement and cheering for Rashim. “I couldn't have gotten those points without your guys’ help,” he shouted excitedly. But the game wasn't over, and LaSalle was still
Basketball has been around for a long while. It was first established in 1891 by James Naismith. James Naismith was once the basketball coach at Kansas University. When he invented the sport he used a peach basket as the goal. When it first originated every time they would score they’d be required to call the janitor out with a ladder to get the ball down. After a few months they cut the bottoms of the basket out.
Of course over the next century the game evolved, but women's basketball seemed to be submerged under men's basketball.
Backstory of Basketball Basketball has been played since 1891, and still continues to be played today as well. Basketball is an intriguing game played by 2 teams with 5 players from each team on the court at the same time. Basketball, as it started out in 1891 had no African American athletes in the sport. That was still going on, even as late as the 1950’s.
In the book, the authors detail the lives of the players and those around them. The impact of being away from family also takes center stage, from dealing with the death of parents and siblings to coping with changes in family dynamics. The game of basketball also helped the girls get away from the Indian Wars and the Dawes Act that had occurred before the boarding school was founded. For many of the girls, basketball was a grounding force that continued to foster an important sisterhood among team members.

While the length and width of the courts are the same between the two, the three-point line is four feet farther from the basket in the NBA. The NBA’s three-point line also consists of a straight line on both sides leading to a semicircle, whereas the NCAA’s three-point line is simply a semicircle with ends on the baselines. This is the main difference between the two courts, and is the only difference affecting the game
The offense was so different when six on six was still going on. As a matter of fact, six on six basketball only had three girls on offense. They were considered the forwards. In fact, forwards were the only ones allowed to shoot the ball. The three girls that were on offense stayed on offense the whole time. With that in mind, never did those girls go to the other side of the court. When it came to dribbling the ball, only two dribbles were allowed. After that player took the maximum amount of dribbles, another teammate had to get open for a pass or that player had to shoot the ball (Tiffany and Cassy). Another thing, if the defense rebounded the ball, they had to get it to their teammates on the other side of the court without the other team stepping in front and getting the pass (Tiffany and Cassy). For free throws, they were worth the same amount of points, but they lined up differently on the side. Six on Six lined up below the big block. The block that is being mentioned is where the girls that play post usually post
Many of us know of the fun game of basketball, the object of the game is to basically run up and down the court and shoot the ball, and block the other team when they try to score. Whichever team has the most points at the end of the game is the winner. According to Bran Faurschou’s article, “ NBA Hoops Online” Basketball was invented in 1891 by, Dr. James Naismith. He was a physical education instructor. Back then the game of basketball was a little bit different, It was the same concept but it was different. When Dr. James was working as the physical education instructor at the YMCA training school, he came up with the game of basketball as an activity for his
Basketball originated in 1891 when future Presbyterian minister named James Naismith (1861-1939) was assigned to teach a P.E. class at Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) training school in Springfield, Massachusetts. The class had been noted for being disorderly, and Naismith was told to invent a new game to keep the young men occupied. Since it was winter and very cold outside, the game had to be played indoors was desirable. Naismith had a flashback to his childhood in Canada, where he and his friends had played "duck on a rock,”. The game involved trying to knock a large rock off a boulder by throwing smaller rocks at it. He also recalled watching rugby players toss a ball into a box in a gym. He had the idea to nail up boxes and the players would attempt to throw a ball. When he couldn't find boxes he used peach baskets. According to Alexander Wolff, in his book 100 Years of Hoops, Naismith drew up the rules for the new game in "about an hour." Most of them still apply in some form of todays. Basketball was a simple game that could be played indoors during winter. Naismith spread the rules freely, and there was a need for Naismith's legacy included the first great college basketball coach, Forrest "Phog" Allen (1885-1974), who played for Naismith at the University of Kansas and went on to win 771 games as a coa...
Basketball is defined as a game where two teams of five play each on a rectangular court, usually indoors (Basketball/Sport). Basketball was invented by James Naismith on December 1, 1891 (Basketball/Sport). The object of basketball is to shoot the basketball through the opposing team’s basket and to out-score them by end of the regulation time limit. If the score is tied at this time, the game will go into overtime until one team wins. While reading about basketball, I found it interesting that when the sport was invented they would nail baskets to balconies with no backboards. This made it easy for spectators (in the balcony) to help their team by either swatting the
Basketball has become an international sport. People all around the world enjoy playing it with friends, or even competing for a championship. But haven’t you always wondered where it all began, who were the first people to play it, and who thought of something as simple as putting a ball through a hoop?
Basketball was created as a sport in 1891 by James Naismith, and it quickly became popular among both men and women. It initially started with the same rules for each gender, but according to Patricia Cain in her article, “Women, Race, and Sports: Life Before Title IX,” the rules quickly changed for women. Cain (2001) states that, “Almost immediately, however, some educators began changing the rules of basket...
December 21, 1891- The birth of basketball. It has been changed from simply shooting a soccer ball into a peach basket to dunking a seven pound, leather ball into an iron rim. In the early years of the game, basketball was not as popular as other sports. In the 1985 NBA draft all this would change with the emergence of a 6'6" basketball phenomenon from Wilmington, North Carolina. Although going third in the draft, he recreated the game and is known as the best player to ever touch a basketball; he is Michael Jordan.
Can you imagine playing the game of basketball without a three point line? Basketball has constantly changed throughout history and continues to change today. The National Basketball Association has risen in popularity and is now one of America’s more popular sports. Because basketball continues to be a popular sport, a fan should learn about the origin of the NBA, how the game evolved from the late 1940s to the early 2000s, and how the players today impact the way it is played.
