The Evolution of Sports Media Have you ever wondered why so many athletes are scrutinized and praised by the media? With the new wave of technology stories can travel in minutes. False and true information is being sent out across social media everyday. Athletes personal lives are never private with the new ways to record their every move. Some people feel that the way athletes get treated is wrong, but others feel that it comes with the job. The media has evolved to cover almost any story they can get their hands on. Some news stations don’t even take the time to make sure the story is true because they want to be first. This affects players in a negative way. Athletes must make quick decisions when talking to the media because one wrong answer could put them in the spotlight. It is proven that athletes are less effective when they are distracted. The media could release a story about an athlete and it could really hurt their performance. An example of an athlete who refused to talk to the media is Kenny Rogers. The reason he refused to talk to the media is because they released a story about him saying that if he didn’t get a contract extension from the rangers he would retire. He ends up having an altercation with two camera men during pre-game warm-ups. He shoved one to the ground and threw one of their cameras to the ground. Motivation makes a player strive for greatness and usually pushes them to the next level of their game. Venus and Serena Williams are sisters who received a large amount of criticism for the way the play, dress, and act in tennis. They were very muscular, black women who wore tight fitting clothing. They were both criticised for not being the normal slim, white, and cutesy female player. The sisters would be criticised by the media and would be told they were only good because they could hit the ball hard. They would be talked about as non-skilled players, but just strong. Even though they were always being criticized they didn’t let it get to them. They ended up using it to motivate them to be great.
