Recommended: Importance of school safety

Throughout the nation, millions of students are attending an unsafe school. Whether it is physical safety or emotional safety, everyone is affected. During school, over 3.2 million students are bullied each year. This is a problem that will be addressed under social and emotional safety. At MM KK School, only three fire drills are issued per year when the state policy says that there should be one a month. This problem will be addressed under drill Safety. Along with social and emotional safety and drill safety, building safety, concussion safety, and technology safety will all be addressed. The topic of school safety is the main focus in Project Citizen. Project Citizen is a way for students in seventh grade to help improve their community. This year, the topic of focus is school safety. To further understand this topic, the students have been looking at websites and videos. To be successful in Project Citizen, the students must work hard, research well, work as a team (for the group part of Project Citizen), and be organized. To be organized, the students created a document where they kept track of the information they needed as well as helpful websites. Also, they had steps to further stay organized. The first step in this process was to identify the problem. In this case that problem is school safety. The next step is to research this problem. This was achieved by going on specific websites. The third step in the process was to evaluate the possible solutions. This was achieved by looking through our research and coming up with ideas for each subtopic. The last step in the process is to develop public policy ideas and pick the best solution. If a student commits suicide, they can never experience what life has to offer. If this problem goes unfixed, the suicide rates can increase even more than they have already. In two thousand one, there were 30,622 suicides. In two thousand ten, there were 38,364 suicides. This is over seven thousand more people. If this increases, we will reach 40,000 by two thousand sixteen. This cannot happen. This problem is often mentioned in the community, but not much is ever done. There are some states that have done something about it. In Washington, there is a law that prohibits bullying. The same law is in place in Illinois. This law has not been much of a help, most likely because of lack of enforcement. Many parents have complained about bullying in their school, but little has been done. It is only when a suicide does happen that action is taken.
