The purpose of this investigation is to identify an aspect of my current assessment practice. My investigation will firstly acknowledge what we do well before focussing on areas for improvement based on formative assessment.
For purposes of clarity my practice is a large sixth form college within the borough of Greater Manchester. In my role as a World of Work Coordinator, my role is to equip learners to understand the importance of, and acquire the essential skills to attain and sustain employment. This involves the distribution of information whilst delivering practical sessions with groups of fifty learners throughout each week for a period of twenty eight weeks. Before completing this assignment, I strategically placed students into teams of five in order to alleviate the pressure of working alone. Race (2007:27) suggests that ‘pairs or groups can be useful when a stronger student can help a weaker one.’ This placed students at ease and helped them work successfully towards the goal. During the session peer and tutor feedback was facilitated, with regards to their use of effective public speaking skills. Formative assessment gives students and teachers information about how students are doing in relation to goals set within the classroom. Well worded and effective feedback provides a student with something they can use which means that the student has to be able hear it and comprehend it. If language is used that is not understood or information given which they don’t value, it is of no use. Additionally, students need to be aware that it is ok to get things wrong or incorrect as this is part of learning process and doesn’t impact on their intelligence.
