Nowadays, new media has become an indispensable and inevitable way in people’s daily life. Because of this situation, network, which is the main channel in new media period, could be seemed as a new competitive market especially in commercial advertising.
Commercial advertising is the main type of advertising in mass media in recent years which has a long history to form. According to the McFall’s remark, he noticed that there are two main factors to lead to commercial advertising’s development. First, Morris mentioned as the development of production and consumption, “ the predominant tendency in cultural studies has been to treat the various activities around production as ‘known’, while those centered on consumption have been understood as ‘enigmatic’ and worthy of sustained analysis”. These two changes could be seemed as the evolution of advertising with an unique and ongoing capacity. (McFall, 2004) However, “the internet is the latest developed electronic mass medium of the 20th century. It is a decentralized, internationally operating network of computers that share a communication protocol which facilitates the exchange of information (Janoschaka, 2004).” Online commercial advertising plays an active role in new media area in generally. According to the research of an advertising agency, in America the total amount of online advertising investment was 50 millions in 1995, while it witnessed a sharp increase from 50millions to 4.62billions in 1999. After Michael Dell came back to Dell to replace Kevin Rollins as CEO, a series of measures started including choosing international advertising giant WPP as their advertising agency. After that, Dell and WPP spent $4.5 billion to create a single agency which is called “Enfatico” to handle Dell’s worldwide marketing services in 2007”. But they failed at last, so WPP folded the Dell-focused agency Enfatico into its Y&R brands after only 16 months in 2009. Enfatico did not help Dell improve their sales a lot in those days. However, Dell coped with this challenge and take effective measures with WPP together to solve this problem well.
This film dealt with advertising and the techniques used today as a way to sell products and services while raising the question as to whether there are more brands in need of a real purpose. Furthermore, it worked to explain some the difficulties found within advertising such as reaching the consumer as well as the evolution of marketing.

Dell’s initial competitive strategy, when it was founded in 1984 by Michael Dell, was to focus mainly on differentiation. Its strategy was to sell customised personal computer systems directly to customers, which was a rapidly emerging market at that time (1). This was done by targeting second-time customers, those that already understand computers and know what they wanted. Meanwhile other companies at the time was selling “’plain brown wrapper’ computers” (2). By offering customisations, Dell gained a better understanding of customers’ needs and wants. This helped the organisation position itself differently against the more popular brands, such as Compaq and IBM.
Dell Inc had very effectively used the direct marketing channel for the sales of computers to the end consumer. When all the other pc makers were selling through retailers and distributors, Dell had started efficient use of the direct channels.

Michael Dell founded Dell Computer Corporation in 1984 with a simple vision and business concept – that personal computers can be built to order and sold directly to consumers. Michael believed his approach had two advantages: (i) by passing distributors and retail dealers eliminated the markups of resellers, and (ii) building to order greatly reduced the costs and risks associated with carrying large stocks of parts, components and finished goods. Its build-to-order and sell-direct approach proved appealing to growing numbers of customers in the mid 1990s as global PC sales rose to record level. In 1998, it was already the 3rd manufacturer in the United States with a 12% share of PC market and a nearly 6% share worldwide. The company’s fastest growing market for the past several quarters was Europe. Even during the Asia economic woes in the early 1998, Dell’s sales in Asia rose 35%. Its sales at the Internet Web site were about $5 million a day and expected to reach $1.5 billion annually by the year-end 1998. Since 1990, Dell’s stock price had exploded from 23 cents per share to $83 per share in May1998 with a 36,000% increase and was the top performing big company then.
