Euthanasia: Mercy or Murder? Should death be an option when life is not worth living? That is the question hotly debated concerning euthanasia. Euthanasia can be defined numerous ways, because there are several types of euthanasia: voluntary active, involuntary active, passive, and the closely related physician-assisted suicide (Manning 2). In general, it comes from the Greek term “’good death,’ but in modern society it has come to mean a death free of any anxiety and pain, often brought about through the use of medication” (Manning 1). Everybody desires a “good death”, no one wants to suffer and die in pain. However, who decides who lives and who dies? Should the government make euthanasia legal? These questions and more will be discussed in the course of this composition. A main idea behind the support of euthanasia is that sick and dying people want to keep their dignity. For instance, some elderly individuals are frail and need nurses’ and family members’ assistance in order to function on a daily basis. Eventually, they come to the decision “that the quality of their life is so diminished that life is no longer worth living,” (Jonen 49). This brings up the topic of active and …show more content…

Euthanasia means “good death” in Greek (Euthanasia 42) or dying in a non-painful manner. Nowadays, it is defined loosely as mercy killing. Killing is murder, no matter how one phrases it. Murder is wrong and illegal; terms, like dignity, suffering, and civil rights, are thrown around to get a response out of people. People are committing suicide; they are dying. Flowery words and interpretations will not change that fatal fact. Death is not beautiful; it is cold and brutal. It is not a release or a relief; it is the absence of life. Advocating euthanasia is the same as advocating the murder or death of a fellow human
